Sure, 45 percent, or his current 42 percent, is higher than Trumps April low of 38 percent, or his all-time Gallup low, last seen in December, of 35 percent. But his numbers have held within a very narrow range since his inauguration. Indeed, Trumps approval has actually been the most stable of any president in polling history, as this chart from Charles Franklin shows:

(63 posts)Whether we are liberal or conservative we have completely divided and have stopped listening to each other. No one on either side can change that. There isn't any middle ground anymore. The older generation of Democrats wasted the last 25 years trying to bridge that gap and activate moderate voters. That's why Hillary ran with Tim Kaine instead of Elizabeth Warren and why most of Obama's policies were Republican policies. It was a lost cause.
It's also why the new generation of Democrats are so exciting. Finally, we have candidates who are courting their base. They know there is no middle ground. Why bother with it? We are going to have to turn things around with half a country. It sucks, but that's the way it is. Trump's numbers are irrelevant. All that really matters is voter activation and producing results with liberal policy in blue states that we can campaign on nationally.
We should keep in mind the same is true for the Republicans. Trump isn't going to win anyone over, either. They may control all three branches, but it's a slim margin. The damage they cause is only done with half the country, too.

(3,435 posts)Naomi Klien (pbs/tavissmiley) said in an interview on pbs....however, she did not provide breakdown as to party affiliation, yet we know that there are more registered democrats than republicans...so given confirmed Russia criminal activity to suppress voter outcome, sway election in trumps favor; voter apathy; voter suppression by gop through nefarious gerrymandering and limiting voting rights, e.g..access to poll limits on early voting; questionable voter purge from public registry. We, the Democratic politic are vehemently against the racist bigoted guy in WH.
Right now I can walk out my door and sample 100 citizens... data will show 90% of Americans are against him, his hate propaganda against anyone non white, non christian; his ant ieducation, environment ; his anti trade, nato-EU, and his support of dictators. QUESTION: Now, what do WE do to move the silent majority, sleeping giant to the polls in 2018, 2020? GOTV!

(5 posts)Most presidents are still relatively unknown to the population at large when they take office. The media circle jerk over Trump for 2 years prior meant that everyone in the country already solidified their opinions before he even moved into the white house. It is a lot easier to get someone to form a new opinion than change one.

(56,828 posts)slowly, but steadily.
However, Trump has solidified his support among Republicans, going from around 80% approval a little over a year ago to around 90% approval among Republicans now. So, while Democrats have held steady with their dislike of Trump, he's gone back up a bit because he's now more popular among Republicans.
