I know it's against TOS to criticize Democratic public figures, and I'm really not trying to do that. Seriously, I'm just baffled as to what his strategy is and what he hoped to gain by doing that.

Chuck Schumer called Donald Trump to urge him to appoint Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court as a way to unite the country. When are the leaders of the Democratic party going to wake up? Trump and the GOP are not trying to unite the country. They are trying to take it over.

(102,232 posts)Schumer knows Trump well, so I'd like to think there was something strategic about this, but I am certainly not seeing it.

Fool me once, fool me 300 times.....

(16,646 posts)If Trump actually did it, it's a win. If he doesn't, Schumer establishes that Trump isn't interested in uniting the country. Basically Schumer is getting out ahead of this one.

(29,199 posts)I see a lot of breast rending and gnashing of teeth here over this and I wonder "why?"
Of course it's not going to work. But what do you have to lose... it's like buying a lotto ticket. Sure its money down the drain... but if DJT has a brain fart and agrees to it... repuke heads everywhere would explode.

Can't win with some people.
He knows full well Donnie's not going to listen to him. That's not the point of asking.

(63 posts)I like Chuck, but I'm hoping he sees he's not they leader for 2019. The best thing he can do right now is step back and let the newer generation take the spotlight. Trump will go as far right as he can. All we can do is filibuster until January. That's what they do. Time to play by their rules.

(11,949 posts)Is as mistaken as your request that we Filibuster till January.
We cannot filibusters the Supreme Court. All they need is a simple majority. They have a simple majority.
There is nothing in creation Schumer can do to stop them.

Wouldn't it be terrible though if MG was appointed and he was worse than Gorsuch?

(108,977 posts)If Trump said yes, we'd have Merrick Garland.
If he said no, we'd be no worse off. And Schumer would have reminded everyone that the seat was stolen.

(15,696 posts)a serious subject for debate leading into the midterms. By attempting to appeal to Trump's "better angels," Senator Schumer just poked the dumbass deplorable with a sharp "why can't we all just get along?" stick.

(14,167 posts)You can't negotiate with terrorists. You have to fight and beat them.
But we still have a segment of leadership that believes the base will make do with grandstanding and talk of "uniting the country."
Who wants to be united with a bunch of misogynistic, child-terrorizing racists?

(15,315 posts)I don't get this post at all. What would you have Dems do? ETA and by the way, the tweet has it wrong. It was the other way around.
Trump was actually the one that called, not Schumer.

(24,407 posts)that he's not expecting this to go anywhere but it doesn't hurt for him to ask. I mean, what's he losing? And he's drawing attention to the stolen Senate seat.
