Mark Harris (R), who won the GOP nomination in North Carolina 9th congressional district, once delivered a religious sermon questioning whether it was the healthiest pursuit for women to prioritize their careers in lieu of their biblical core calling, ABC News reports.
In one portion of Harris sermon, he tells parishioners that only one title is given to a woman in all of scripture
the title given to a woman is helper.'
He then quoted from the Epistle of Paul to Titus, reading, The older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior
that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God not be blasphemed.

Lydia ran her own dye business.
A certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, one who worshiped God, heard us; whose heart the Lord opened to listen to the things which were spoken by Paul. When she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and stay." So she persuaded us.

(82,849 posts)What sort of salary are we talking about for a wage earner to buy a new car every other year or so, buy a house big enough to raise a family, save enough for the kids to go to college, receive three to four weeks' paid vacation every year, paid sick time, and a pension at retirement? You know, so the little lady can stay home, helping.
Or is he still working on that aspect of things?

(12,858 posts)Translated as defender. Laypeople have learned this in the last 20 yrs or so. It's been widely discussed by Biblical scholars that the helper/helpmeet translation was the result of translators' personal bias.
For analysis of this biased translation and others, see articles at the Junia Project blog--juniaproject.com.
NB: Junia is addressed in one of Paul's letters as 'apostle'. But since 'everyone knows' that a woman could not be an apostle, the translaters changed the name to a masculine one that occurs nowhere else in classical or Biblical Greek. (I think the substitute name was Junias.)
