Pollster: Immigration won't help GOP woo Independents

While much of President Trump's political base appears to be enthusiastic about stricter immigration laws, Republicans may be making a mistake to think that shifting the national debate to the topic of immigration is beneficial to them.

According to Daniel Cox, director of polling research at PRRI, conservative voters' views on immigration don't line up well with the general public.

Republicans and the Trump administration "have talked about making immigration a priority for the 2018 elections, and I think that that issue won't do them that good if you look at where independents are on that issue," Cox told The Hill's Bob Cusack during a Thursday episode of Hill.TV's "What America's Thinking."

"Whether it's the wall, whether it's family separation, they are much more aligned with Democrats than they are with Republicans," he continued.

The Trump administration has faced intense backlash over its "zero tolerance" immigration policy in recent weeks, which resulted in the separation of migrant families at the U.S. southern border.
