Both construct sentences for effect, that is how I was taught from grade school through college. Steinbeck won a Noble for Literature, so I assume he knew how to write. There are time when a person purposely invert the position of nouns, verbs, adjectives, or let a sentence run on, and there are time when that must not happen.

When I read the OP, I understood instantly what was being conveyed, my guess is the great majority of DU people that read it understood instantly what the message was.

Does anyone else remember lice checks in grade school? The school nurse would investigate your scalp with a pair of individual sharp sticks that could only be used once while wearing a pair of gloves because lice infestations spread and they didn't want to get lice themselves or spread them to another child. If one kid in a place where kids spend a large amount of time together has lice, it's very likely more children in this location also have lice.
