(31,261 posts)US soybeans have a higher protein content, likely from years of selective seed planting. What better way to catch a rival than to buy their product when they are down and then figure out how to build a better product.

(31,261 posts)would buy competitors products on the open market and reverse engineer them. I thought the tactic was scummy, but the company had a team of people dedicated to that effort, I was not part of it and wanted nothing to do with it.
My advice to inventors is that they figure out how to throw a component of feature into a product that does nothing, but can be confused for a component that is key to the invention. The trick throws off copycats, if the decoy is done cleverly it can really mess with their heads, and the trick allows for a patent extension down the road.
