via the Guardian "The name of the diver who has died during the operation has been named by Samarn Kunan, 38, a former Thai navy Seal. He died while placing oxygen tanks around the cave."

OK, he wasn't a US Navy Seal... but I bet he was well trained.

I'm so sorry for the loss for this brave man's family.

This cave is a killer when the water is up.

4. He was planting extra oxygen tanks all over the cave system. He has probably already saved lives

5. yes, but he didn't die placing a tank on the cave floor.

I bet he died in the passage where you have to take your tank off and push it (plus the spares you want to place) in front of you. Fighting the current.

The absolutely least charitable view of this man's skills and training is that he was dozens of times safer than any of the children involved.

dozens of times is... well.. least charitable is being really nice.

Never dived with a Thai Navy Seal... but I have dived with US Navy Seals ( in fact my mentor / trainer was an ex Navy Seal )... and I have the upmost respect for their skills.
