(102,234 posts)Don't tell me how we need to give benefit-of-the-doubt and never give up trying to turn them around. Those who listen to nothing but Faux News, Breitbart, Sinclair, RW Hate Radio will need a full fledged cult deprogrammer and even then we'll probably only succeed with a small percent.
Yes, I have likely Trump supporters who I have to interact with. We basically talk about NOTHING other than pets and weather.

Without them, there would be no Trump.

(21,675 posts)is having family members who are Magats. My oldest son and several cousins are, and it's the source of much angst! We barely speak, because they don't see what's wrong with him, and question how I can.

(21,675 posts)Both of my sibs are, and have always been, dems, so I have no beef with them. But my oldest son...that really kills me, as he wasn't raised like that! His father, who raised him during his teens (we're divorced) is a hardcore Xtian Magat. Ex is a one of those white boomers who life has passed by, without a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. Ignorant and watches only Faux. I can ignore him, but if I did so with my son, I'd never see my 3 grandchildren, so there's that. On July 4, he texted me a picture of him smooching a life-sized cutout of Chump. Nice son, huh?

(5,810 posts)That might come close to the depths of my hatred for Bluto. (I usually refer to him as tRump but I remembered from childhood that Popeyes thorn in the flesh was Bluto. So I decided to call tRump Bluto for a while.) Bluto was bloated, not the sharpest knife in the drawer and a very devious character, not above punching a guy when he is down. That pretty much describes tRump. On a good day. On his bad days, those are actually his better traits.

(7,394 posts)Voted for Bush twice. Married to an unrepentant conservative I've bumped heads with for years.
Both are now virulently anti-Trump.
At the 4th of July gathering I told her I'd gone to the immigration protest, and my sister-in-law went fully ballistic.
"I don't know why someone doesn't just kill him," she hissed through clenched teeth. "I hate him."
Holy cow. Can't tell you how odd it is to hear that from this woman. She's as angry as you are, and yet -- she helped build this Infernal Machine.
Gave me hope.

(81,220 posts)We have to get to work taking the WHOLE thing back.
It may take awhile, too. It took the bad guys 40 years or so. But they built it - with the establishment of think tanks and institutes, the grooming of talking-heads and other disciples, the buying up of media properties to spread their "goons' gospel of greed" if you will, the recruitment and nurturing of "talent" to populate those media properties, the attack on our public education system, the gerrymandering and Citizens United efforts that helped them rig the election game, and now they're enjoying many fruits of all those labors.
They had a blue print to work from: the "Powell Memo" written by Lewis Powell, commissioned by the US Chamber of Commerce, in 1971, basically as a reaction to all them damn hippies and free love, them uppity students and their draft card-burning campus unrest, them uppity women and their bra-burning man-hating "liberation", them uppity black people and their insistence on equal standing with whites, all that dancing around in the nude at Woodstock, etc. The business community didn't like what was happening during the 60s and found it threatening, and in need of being beaten back.
http://reclaimdemocracy.org/powell_memo_lewis/
But what now concerns us is quite new in the history of America. We are not dealing with sporadic or isolated attacks from a relatively few extremists or even from the minority socialist cadre. Rather, the assault on the enterprise system is broadly based and consistently pursued. It is gaining momentum and converts.
Sources of the Attack
The sources are varied and diffused. They include, not unexpectedly, the Communists, New Leftists and other revolutionaries who would destroy the entire system, both political and economic. These extremists of the left are far more numerous, better financed, and increasingly are more welcomed and encouraged by other elements of society, than ever before in our history. But they remain a small minority, and are not yet the principal cause for concern.
The most disquieting voices joining the chorus of criticism come from perfectly respectable elements of society: from the college campus, the pulpit, the media, the intellectual and literary journals, the arts and sciences, and from politicians. In most of these groups the movement against the system is participated in only by minorities. Yet, these often are the most articulate, the most vocal, the most prolific in their writing and speaking.
Moreover, much of the media-for varying motives and in varying degrees-either voluntarily accords unique publicity to these attackers, or at least allows them to exploit the media for their purposes. This is especially true of television, which now plays such a predominant role in shaping the thinking, attitudes and emotions of our people.
It goes on. And on. And on.
I'm JUST NOW starting to dig down into something intriguing:
https://www.aeinstein.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/FDTD.pdf
This is an extended think piece called "From Dictatorship to Democracy," from theAlbert Einstein Institution, which looks mighty interesting - almost a counter-manifesto detailing how to fight and beat dictatorship, at least from first glance. Don't know yet if it's a workable response to the Powell memo because it's long and I'm still just getting into it.
I will report back. It's WE who must gain momentum and converts again. The bad guys have MORE THAN a 40-year head start. WE have to get cracking, and get cracking RIGHT NOW. We have a lot of ground to make up.

(10,252 posts)But I understand why you feel that way. Hatred makes people stupid, and it makes us no better than the Trump Hate and Greed Team. We are better than that. Much much better. There is a place for anger if it's handled effectively. Anger can be sharp and hot and very very clear, if we use it to see what needs to be done. We must stay focused on kicking GOP butt in the Nov elections. The Trump supporters hate our guts and want to see everyone, who isn't them, to fail, get hurt, and suffer. That's how much they have Liberals, who practice compassion.

(10,252 posts)Emotions are not real, solid, self-existent things. They only SEEM real. In Buddhism, we say that such mental formations are completely empty of self existence. Recognizing the energy of such a powerful emotion, we can choose not to blindly act it out, but to clearly do something positive and of benefit to those that are being harmed by hatred. We are not powerless. We can do something about this plague that has infected our government. It won't be easy. It will take a great struggle. So have to stay calm and focused. I envision a great renaissance of ethical behavior, decency, and personal integrity in our political representatives. I want to feel proud of my country again. I know that the majority of Americans want the same thing. As Trump sinks lower and lower into moral degeneracy, hatred, and stupidity, more and more of us approach the critical mass needed to make change for the better.

(11,686 posts)I keep allowing myself to fear what I may lose but as we are taught in Buddhism it is unhealthy to tie yourself to anything because it keeps you from growing and moving fluidly making it just about impossible to help others move along also.

(10,252 posts)Self discipline is exactly what Trump and Republicans lack. We can calm down our cohorts, and encourage them to stay focused on the job at hand - winning big time in Nov. Republicans and Trump get weirder and weirder every week. I am no longer surprised by any stupid degenerate thing they do.

And his enablers--Pence, McConnell, Ryan, Sessions, Rubio--after what Trump said about him!--and Cruz, of course. Maybe he most of all, after what Trump said about his father.
