Rockland, Maine mayor questions intent of Knox County sheriff's checkpoints

“I was dismayed to read in the paper, the plans of the Knox County Sheriff’s Department to hold police checkpoints over the coming months,
stopping all traffic and checking drivers’ and occupants’ papers,” Mayor Valli Geiger said Thursday.

"Is this an attempt to identify, harass and detain immigrants? If immigrants are found during these checkpoints, what then? Will we be separating any children from their parents and where will we be putting them?” Geiger asked.

“Any kind of roadblock, where everyone is stopped, presents opportunity for things to go wrong between police with weapons, citizens with and without weapons and frightened people. It is also a hardship on the working poor ..."

...absent evidence to warrant a search of the vehicle, they have no right to detain anyone with a valid drivers license, whether a citizen or not.

Is that why Trump was buttering up Clarke and Aripo, to get county sheriffs on his side?

I am concerned that so many people are now being conditioned to accept roadblocks on interstates, state highways, county roads.

Here in my lil town of 6,000 they still have frequent "DUI safety checks" even at 10 am!
and the city has now installed one of those walk thru metal detection scanners at the entrances of City Hall.
There have been no incidents that could possible justify this. We are out in the middle of nowhere.

It's summertime, the roads are full of visitors (some from Canada), and Knox County Sheriff's Dept. will kill our tourist industry with this bullshit.

Never encountered a "routine" roadblock anywhere in midcoast Maine.

THIS IS NEW.

"In a sweeping effort to increase local law enforcement’s role in immigration enforcement, the Trump administration is preparing to increase the number of officers who are authorized to act as federal immigration enforcers through additional 287(g) agreements."
