I was dismayed to read in the paper, the plans of the Knox County Sheriffs Department to hold police checkpoints over the coming months,
stopping all traffic and checking drivers and occupants papers, Mayor Valli Geiger said Thursday.
"Is this an attempt to identify, harass and detain immigrants? If immigrants are found during these checkpoints, what then? Will we be separating any children from their parents and where will we be putting them? Geiger asked.
Any kind of roadblock, where everyone is stopped, presents opportunity for things to go wrong between police with weapons, citizens with and without weapons and frightened people. It is also a hardship on the working poor ..."

(94,502 posts)...absent evidence to warrant a search of the vehicle, they have no right to detain anyone with a valid drivers license, whether a citizen or not.

I am concerned that so many people are now being conditioned to accept roadblocks on interstates, state highways, county roads.
Here in my lil town of 6,000 they still have frequent "DUI safety checks" even at 10 am!
and the city has now installed one of those walk thru metal detection scanners at the entrances of City Hall.
There have been no incidents that could possible justify this. We are out in the middle of nowhere.
