Faced with a court-imposed deadline to reunite families separated at the southwest border, federal authorities are calling in volunteers to sort through records and resorting to DNA tests to match children with parents. And they acknowledged for the first time Thursday that of the nearly 3,000 children who are still in federal custody, about 100 are under the age of 5.


Records linking children to their parents have disappeared, and in some cases have been destroyed, according to two officials of the Department of Homeland Security, leaving the authorities struggling to identify connections between family members.

The effort is complicated by the fact that two federal agencies are involved in detaining and sheltering migrants, and they did not initially share records with each other. On Friday, the leadership of the Department of Health and Human Services, which shelters the children and must now undertake reunifications, sent out a plea to federal public health workers for help with an exhaustive manual search of records.

But those precautions were undermined in some cases by the other federal agency that has initial custody of apprehended migrants in the first 72 hours after they cross the border — Customs and Border Protection. In hundreds of cases, Customs agents deleted the initial records in which parents and children were listed together as a family with a “family identification number,” according to two officials at the Department of Homeland Security, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the process. As a result, the parents and children appeared in federal computers to have no connection to one another.

These people do not consider these children to be human.

For that matter, most of us wouldn't treat a dog this way.

We can never again wonder, "How could good Germans do the work in concentration camps?"

We know now there is an entire group of Americans who are enthusiastically taking children from their parents, shipping them away, and deliberately not keeping records.

They take their cues from Trump, who loves no one and believes in no values. He actually can look at this 8-year-old crying for his mother and say, "MS-13!" He doesn't even care enough to believe it. But it's enough for him to say that, and these supporters of his nod and say, "Yes, that child crying for his mother is MS-13."

I don't know if we can come back from this. 3000 children! Kidnapped. There's no other word for it. There are accounts that the parents are being threatened: "We are putting your child up for adoption."

9. Franco stole the children of his "enemies" and gave them to his followers

to raise so they wouldn't be "indoctrinated" by the thinking of his "enemies". Those who spoke out against him. People he considered inferior.

Some remained wards of the state to be reared in Franco dogma.

The parents had been jailed, murdered, or disappeared.

Telling people at the border to either "choose" to leave with or without their children, losing children, losing records/destroying records - where records were kept at all - leaves all the children vulnerable to becoming wards of the state.

So, what was the intention?

Labeling people as an infestation, as rapists and murderers - and then taking and - losing - their kids?

I don't find it far fetched to think of Franco, or the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo - Argentina (under Jorge Videla).

Anyone who refers to Nazis as "very fine people" is capable of anything.

Anyone who would put into action the separation of children from their parents as a means to punish the parents - and then losing those children - is capable of anything.
