A Native American Tribe Has a $800 Million Contract to Run ICE Detention Centers

The Port Isabel Detention Center in Los Fresnos, Texas, is currently holding many of the parents who have been separated from their kids. But while PIDC is owned by ICE, its guards are provided by a subsidiary of Ahtna, Inc., a portfolio of businesses operated by the Ahtna, a federally recognized Alaska Native people.

Ahtna, Inc. is one of a number of companies profiting off of the deportation of undocumented immigrants from the United States. Previous reporting by The Daily Beast has revealed that the federal government currently employs the services of several companies and charities bringing in millions of dollars off of the Trump administration’s treatment of immigrant families.

The Ahtna, who have also run immigrant detention centers in New York, Florida, and Arizona in addition to Port Isabel, fall under the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) umbrella, and Ahtna, Inc. is an Alaska Native Regional Corporation established by Congress under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971.

A recent statement from the NCAI decried the Trump administration’s “forced separation of immigrant children from their families,” calling it “simply immoral” and a reminder of “a dark period for many Native American families.”

Even if there is an Ahtna people, I'd guess that their tribe/group has little role in actually 'running' this Corporation.

I'm betting this is some kind of scam, leveraging tax breaks and preferred treatment (in some ways) that Native Organizations get (and REAL ones, should get them, to be clear) to line a buncha 'connected' white men's pockets.

Just like there are whites who will take advantage of others, there are native and Asian and blacks and Latinos who are just as bad as the worst whites.

Q. What special contracting privileges do ANCs have?

Congress has given ANCs contracting advantages that other minority businesses don't have.

* While other participants are limited to $3.5 million contracts for services (or $5.5 million for goods), ANCs have no limit and often get no-bid contracts worth tens of millions of dollars.
* While other participants are allowed to go through the SBA 8(a) program only once before graduating, ANCs can remain in the program as long as they keep creating new subsidiaries. A firm graduates the program after nine years or when it has grown to meet industry standards for number of employees or annual revenue.
* While other companies have to prove every year that they are economically and socially disadvantaged, ANCs are considered permanently disadvantaged and can stay in the program -- even those that are among the 100 biggest government contractors.
* While other companies have to be run by a minority, ANCs and their subsidiaries often have non-native managers.

Well, that doesn't sound ripe for corruption or exploitation AT ALL.
