neighbors who had those tattoos. And I had a friend whose family fled Nazi Germany in 1938 with nothing but the clothes on their backs. She was three years old.

(2,560 posts)It was in a bookstore in Adelaide, South Australia. The bookstore had small sections devoted to books written in several European languages. One section was "Polish." An elderly, rather short, gentleman was reaching for a book from the top shelf in that section. He pulled out the book, but the book next to it fell on the floor. I picked it up and asked "Do you wish to look at this book, Sir?". He said he did not and I replaced the book on the shelf.
Why "Sir"? Because, when he was stretching for that book, his wrist became exposed and I could see see his tattoo. I knew that that gentleman had seen and experienced things worse than my worst nightmares.
