Elvis Costello reveals 'very aggressive' cancer diagnosis, cancels European tour dates

Elvis Costello has canceled his remaining European tour dates for the summer, revealing that he is recovering from surgery to remove “a small but very aggressive cancerous malignancy.”

The 63-year-old singer and songwriter, best known for late ’70s hits such as “Alison” and “Watching the Detectives,” said doctors had advised him to pull the shows to avoid putting his health at risk, according to an announcement posted to his website on Friday, July 6.

“Six weeks ago my specialist called me and said, ‘You should start playing the Lotto,’” Costello wrote. “He had rarely, if ever, seen such a small but very aggressive cancerous malignancy that could be defeated by a single surgery.”

Initially, Costello thought he could continue with his tour, but he said he ultimately realized that the post-surgical guidelines for the surgery, which recommend up to four weeks of recovery time, made it impossible to carry on performing two-hour concerts on a nightly basis.
