The Trump Administrations negotiations with North Korea appear to be deteriorating, with officials from the Hermit Kingdom reportedly slamming Secretary of State Mike Pompeos efforts as gangster-like and cancerous.
Analyst Victor Cha, a former member of the National Security Council who has himself negotiated with North Korea under George W. Bush:
What we saw was the secretary trying to put lipstick on a pig, he said. The North Koreans are playing from the same play book 10 years ago. To think that we sent the American president to Singapore, and the North Koreans are coming back with the same play book from 10 years ago. Its not encouraging at all.
What concerns me is the spin we will get coming out of the White House. Its going to harm the president publicly from a repetitional standpoint, if it becomes clear that North Koreans are enhancing their nuclear program, and never intended to denuclearize.
We are not going to get the truth, there will be a political spin on thiseverybody is OK, we are making progress, nothing to see here, move along.

(6,063 posts)1. Get one or more competing narratives out there, even if they're nonsensical. Just basically throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks.
2. Lose all memory of anything Trump said in the past that contradicts the current reality.
3. Pick some trivial point and get outraged about it. "Chuck Schumer said President Trump was a bozo! Outrage! Uncivil! No respect for the office of the President!!"
4. Jump on the next crisis and move on. Forget the whole thing.
