Reported in German newspaper Die Zeit today.
Report says 18,500 govt employees were dismissed.
Is this being reported in US media?
Pic of Erdogan in report -- very inpleasant expression.

(2,388 posts)Following are some details of the new system (some of the changes have already taken effect following the referendum):
- The office of prime minister will be abolished. The president will appoint the cabinet and an undefined number of vice-presidents.
- The president will be able to issue decrees to form and regulate ministries and appoint and remove senior civil servants, all without parliamentary approval.
- Decrees will not be allowed on issues concerning human rights or basic freedoms, or to override existing laws. Courts will decide if a decree interferes with the law. Critics say the vague wording of the legal code - and the judicial systems reputation for partiality - means rulings may lack independence.
- The president will be able to declare a state of emergency for up to six months and no longer require cabinet approval to do so. During the emergency rule, the president will be able to issue decrees on basic rights and freedoms.

(10,269 posts)I'm so glad this is America and 'it can't happen here' and OUR ruling party isn't led by a self-important jacka...
What's that you say? Why yes I have been asleep for almost 2 years, why do you ask?
Still the best straight man.
As good as a sarcasm tag!?

(6,973 posts)Wants to happen in this country if the accounts of what happened are true. tRump wants to be the authoritarian, ball-busting, oligarchic "Big Daddy" ruling over the USA. Take us back to the 1920's or 1930's when people in unions protesting could be shot at and murdered. Make the USA resemble ruSSia, which is flat broke outside of Moscow & St. Petersburg.
In fact, Fatso wants to change the name of our country from the USA into the USSA. His puppet-master would LOVE that.

(14,308 posts)The basic idea was that Turkey is made up of two populations.
There is a coastal population which retains much of Greek culture, is educated, and many have relationships and family ties to the west (Greece and Italy mostly).
Then there is an inland Anatolian population which is much more rural, uneducated and much more fundamentalist.
Population trends were the coastal group was not having enough babies to replace themselves and the inland group was having a population explosion. Eventually the religious rural group would outvote the educated coastal group and Turkey would become a fundamentalist Islamic Republic. At that point, much of the coastal population, especially the more educated part would emigrate to Europe.
Seems to be coming true.
