(CNN)A beauty queen gave up her title after a skit was performed at the Miss Massachusetts competition that made fun of the #MeToo movement. Maude Gorman was one of the contestants in the Miss Massachusetts pageant earlier this month, when a crack about #MeToo was made on stage. Gorman, who said she was gang raped when she was 13, said the moment she heard the joke that she "instantly knew I had to do something. It was going to eat away at me if I didn't," she told CNN.
She resigned from her title of Miss Plymouth County 2018 last week, writing on Instagram: "While I'm grateful for the opportunities that @missamerica creates for young women, I am also internally conflicted; as the #metoo movement was mocked on stage during the final competition of Miss Massachusetts. As both a survivor, and advocate for victims rights and sexual violence on a whole, I refuse to stand idly by and simply 'let this go.'"
A video containing a portion of the controversial skit was posted by the Observer.
In what the Observer described as part of the comedy sketch, a woman is onstage, kneeling and talking about how Miss America has scrapped the swimsuit portion from its competition.
"Miss American did away with the swimsuit competition," the woman says in the skit. "We may have very well seen the last ever swimsuit competition on stage. It's very upsetting and I'm trying to understand, God, why it happened."
"Me too, Amy," replies a man whom the Observer described as dressed as God and holding a #MeToo sign. The crowd cheers and laughs, and the skit continues.
Good for her. I can't believe shit like this still goes on.

(61,675 posts)was the one doing the skit and was pushed into resigning her title. But it was a contestant that did it.

(6,856 posts)I think. Regardless, her suffering is real and life-altering. We all feel her pain at being reminded in any way of what happened. Is jokingly blaming the MeToo movement for no swimsuit competition in the Miss America pageant crossing the line? One thing for certain, the skit was dreadfully moronic and painful to watch.
Did anyone else watch?

(56,359 posts)there is no humor anywhere with sexual assault and I think its reasonable to believe that programs like swimsuit competitions contribute to the objectification of women and feeds the social misfits of the incel "movement".

(1,765 posts)That is disgusting though that they would allow a skit like that (not surprising just disappointing). I am proud of her though for standing up for herself and others in this way.

We have to pick up the gauntlet when deplorable people, in our face, dare us to take a stand. A real star is born.

(45,261 posts)or anyone for that matter? It's a serious problem. Mocking it would enable the problem to continue.
Miss Gorman looks like a very strong beautiful survivor of horrific brutality at age 13.

(37,648 posts)These contestants spend years and thousands of dollars preparing for competing. It's a big deal to give up the crown (and I supposed the winnings, whatever they were). Good for her!

(14,516 posts)our cultural tendency to judge men on ability and performance, while we judge women on how pretty they are.
Seems to me that until things like beauty pageants that overtly tell us that we ought to judge women primarily on their 'beauty' as defined within this patriarchal culture are nipped in the bud, our daughters and granddaughters won't even be close to being able to compete on an even playing field.
As to the skit, that's pretty sick.
This young lady has real spine. She will quite likely go far in her life.

Gee, that sounds SO empowering, standing around being scrutinized for how you LOOK. Where the hell do I sign up?
And the people who defend it are missing the point. Oh you get a prize for being the prettiest? Oh, well, then do carry on...
Oh wait, she has a talent too?
I just want to barf. No wonder that disgusting skit made it onto the stage. Hundreds of women, willingly subjugating themselves like that. What a shock they'd be put down for standing up against sexual violence.
