In Wisconsin, a Democratic star finds himself in a primary brawl-First debate between Bryce/Meyers

Bryce did not do well in his debate with Cathy Meyers https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2018/07/09/in-wisconsin-a-democratic-star-finds-himself-in-a-primary-brawl/?utm_term=.97bbf28ac885

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — On Friday, CNN reported that Randy Bryce, the Democratic union organizer running for Congress in Wisconsin’s 1st District, had been arrested for marijuana possession in 1991 and driving under the influence of alcohol in 1998.

Bryce owned up to the arrests, and told CNN that he had grown and changed over the past 20 years. But the timing was brutal: Bryce was 48 hours away from debating Cathy Myers, a school board member in Paul D. Ryan’s hometown of Janesville, who is also seeking the Democratic nomination for the retiring House speaker’s seat. When they met, in front of 200 voters in a high school auditorium, it took Myers just 30 seconds to go on the attack.

“We’re not going to hold Trump accountable with viral tweets and poll-tested one-liners,” said Myers, sitting at the other end of a long table from a poker-faced Bryce. “We have to elect someone that is not going to be able to win, but to serve.”

The Democratic primary in Ryan’s southeast Wisconsin district, which has been reliably Republican since the party’s 1994 landslide, has quietly become one of the most bitter in the country. Bryce entered the race last June with a viral video ad that made him a left-wing sensation, memorably described as a candidate who had been “genetically engineered from Bruce Springsteen songs.” Myers declared her own candidacy a few days later, and did not become a left-wing sensation.

Winning this district will require either candidate to do more than have one good ad. 33taw Jul 2018 #6

driving with a suspended license related to the DUI, 2 for protesting and falling behind on child support (due to cancer) payments that he eventually got caught up on. More than anything, the arrests show how someone who is poor or loses their job or gets sick can get caught up in the court system where minor offenses and fines can pile up.

JMHO that Meyers must not have that much appeal to voters if she's resorting to attack mode.

8 arrests are going to matter in a district that votes 70% republican.

The Washington Post description of the debate is all in for Myers, in my opinion. I thought they turned out about even. Randy Bryce may not be a polished debater but he speaks from the heart and knows from personal experience how hard it is to overcome grave misfortune and work hard to make it. A lot of people in that district have gone through their own trials and may appreciate Randy's perspective. It's easier to learn the ins and outs of Congress than to know from your own struggles what your constituents need you to fight for.
