Just another battle in the "cultural revolution"...

...that liberals have been fighting since the end of the Vietnam War.

America had always been a very nationalistic, conservative country up to the late '60's. With the anti-war movement, the women's equality movement, the civil rights struggles, the country was challenged by new ideas and new values.

There were many skirmishes over the issue of abortion, prayer in school, integration in our schools and society in general, affirmative action, and so forth.

This latest nomination of Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court is just another battle in the larger cultural revolution. America is very slow to change from its conservative past. Same-sex marriage and gay rights and a black man as President challenged the endurance and ideology of conservatives. They became so desperate that they were willing to sacrifice everything, including their souls, to prove they were still a credible political force in America. They were willing to accept a scoundrel and traitor like Donald Trump so long as he would fight for their agenda and stop the assault from the "liberals" on their way of life.

This may seem like a "conservative" victory to many, but in the big picture, it does not carry a lot of weight or significance. Because, nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come. The ideas of justice and equality are more powerful than the entire conservative agenda in this country.

The cultural revolution continues. As Theodore Parker and Martin Luther King, Jr and others have stated: 'The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.'

it may get much worse with significant sacrifices and a war before we may get back on track. No easy way out, justice does not continue to work on its own.

The arc of the universe is long indeed, but it looks like it's going to bend back into a coat hanger for women, and the closet for gay Americans.
If the notion of "settled law" is destroyed... all bets are off.

My granddaughters are just becoming young women and I fought this battle for years before their birth thinking that someday they would reap the benefits of my struggle. I am not comforted by the long good fight rhetoric.

But i do think it is part of a longer struggle. And justice will prevail in the end. That does not mean the journey will be easy.
