I an beginning to believe that the only solution is to strongly limit federal power and empower states and local government. Let red America have their way in their areas. Let progressive America grow unfettered.

Put a stop to the federal tax scheme which transfers funds from blue to red. Let's see them pay for themselves.

We're becoming too different to live under a shared set of rules and values.

except that it isn't possible to make such a neat divide. I live in GA, traditionally red, but our urban centers are blue and often majority minority. I suspect that is true in many other states where the divide is more urban v. rural rather than a state-wide red population.

While all of our rights are under attack by this maladministration, I wouldn't support efforts to limit Federal power to control say voting rights, women's reproductive rights, and LGBTQ right to marry whomever they love. While it's not "fair" to transfer from blue states to red states, withholding Federal funds to these states would hurt a lot of Democrats.

...but the sort of outlier our elected "representatives" have always coddled. So extension, I guess?

of what the country has always been, but has made halting steps at trying to rein in and change for the better.

We are returning to the 1930's, when many Americans admired Hitler for 'what he did' to make Germany 'great' again.

Roosevelt saved us then, along with a shitload of fellow Dems, who were shit on racism, but did much to improve the lives of working class people and rein in the investor classes from being able to whipsaw the economy from boom to bust. Back then, the country was saved from fascism by moving to a form of regulated Capitalism that still drove the economy, but didn't fully take it over.

We're really on the edge again.

A majority of white Americans are very bigoted, and that constitutes way too many people to call Trump a mere perversion. But there are a hell of a lot of people who oppose Trump and everything he stands for.

Ad well as conservative economics and social theory. America is bigoted as human beings are bigoted, I don’t think we own the patent. What we are is, a powerful wealthy nation run by white men in a changing demographic. Trump is a result of that and Trump is a big mirror. Far to many like what they see.
