Volvo may cancel 4,000 worker job expansion in Trump-friendly South Carolina after being rocked with tariffs: reportTOM BOGGIONI
10 JUL 2018 AT 10:30 ET
Foreign-based car manufacturers who have invested billions of dollars in new car plants in South Carolina and other southern states that were solidly in President Donald Trumps camp are now having second thoughts about hiring due to new tariffs that could make the cars prohibitively expensive if they exported to Europe and China.
According to the Wall Street Journal, BMW, Daimler and Chinas Zhejiang Geely Holdings Volvo Cars have been making massive investments in production facilities with the intent of making more luxury automobiles in the U.S. that would then be sent overseas. However, Trumps imposition of new tariffs on Chinese goods causing China to engage in a trade war by imposing their own 40 percent tariff on auto imports has manufacturers considering scaling back production and, with that, not hiring new assembly line workers.
The report states that Volvo Cars also opened a new $1.1 billion plant near Charleston, S.C., last month to produce its S60 midsize sedan for North American markets, with plans to begin production of a SUV model that they hoped to export to China.Under that scenario the company would go on a hiring binge, boosting current staff from 1,200 to 4000 workers. That plan is currently being questioned.
Half of the 4,000 jobs will build cars for export, Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson said in a recent interview. That could be jeopardized if something were to restrict trade.

(10,084 posts)Where the CEO iof Volvo was speaking to a group of business leaders in SC that included Nikki Haley. She implored those that may have influence on the administration to speak to the *president about how these tarriffs will directly cause harm to Volvo's buiness, foreign businesses like Volvo, and how American jobs will be lost. Nikki Haley left the room during that speech.
They just don't care about jobs. They are all about some aelf-serving, misguided punitive action, without thought or care to the consequences for actual American workers.

(99 posts)I've given up hope on anything making the trumpers turn against him. I thought if it hit them in the pocketbook, they might regain some sense of reality and finally see this emperor's without clothes. But nothing, absolutely nothing seems to sway these people! I've never seen anything like in my lifetime.
I am a person of color. I strongly supported Obama and HRC, not because he is black and she is a woman, but because they are Democrats. I've always felt that it is the democrats who care about the American PEOPLE. Nevertheless, I disagreed strongly with some of the decisions Obama made and I was vocal about them. These people go along with EVERYTHING, his mistreatment of women, dismantling the ACA, breaking up families, putting babies and children in cages, his a hatred of all non-whites...the list goes on and still they say, Trump will MAGA.
I just don't understand it.
