Officer resigns amid probe over lack of response to man harassing woman for wearing Puerto Rico shir

An Illinois police officer being investigated for his inaction as an intoxicated man berated a woman wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag has resigned, the Forest Preserves of Cook County said Wednesday.

The man who was tormenting Irizarry, identified by police as Timothy Trybus, 62, has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct. He was intoxicated at the time, the Forest Preserves of Cook County has said.

In the video, Irizarry, who rented space in the park for a birthday party, is heard telling the man who is yelling at her and coming closer, to get away from her. walked towards the drunken slob and told him to leave. The cop intervened at that point because I think the cop thought it would escalate and give him a chance to arrest the woman's friend.

In fact, if you watch the whole 36-minute video, it becomes clear that the arriving officers weren't responding to what happened to the woman in the Puerto Rico shirt. They were responding to an incident in the park just prior to that, in which Trybus allegedly assaulted another woman.

The first officer was useless, but the other officers acted professionally. This should be noted.

Yes, of course it was just the one officer that acted inappropriately. It says Officer Connor told her the man just had a "big mouth" and was not a threat. Guess he didn't know about those three arrests or the earlier assault! But regardless, what the man was screaming was hate speech, and his harrassment of that woman was a hate crime, not just someone having a big mouth. Officer Connor's conduct was inexcusable.
