First of all, any German speaker would have recognized her accent as Austrian. Second, she was reading an article about women whose profession it was to "scratch eggs." Whether or not it was about engraving drawings on new eggs, or removing debris from fossils, this was never made clear. But German slang for testicles is not "balls," but "eggs," and the news item she was reading said that women who were good at scratching "eggs" were few and far between, and THAT is what cracked her up (understandably enough, I'd say).

There was a German film based on the life of Hitler's personal secretary through the last days of the war. There is a scene in the Führerbunker where Hitler is rating madly about how everybody is betraying him and nothing is going right. That scene has been given more different sets of subtitles than Trump has lies.

"The cultural values are threatened with extinction, we can only find very few ladies who are masters of the technique but in case one truly searches for active ball scratchers then the available choices are very small"
Then she goes into the laughing fit and after that a vernacular and pronunciation I'm not that familiar with so I don't really catch the rest well enough to translate.

But the first part is a verbatim translation.
I think you also should be howling...

"Egg scratchers" not ball scratchers. It's "ball scratchers" only if you translate slang to slang, which was not the original intent.

There actually is an art of "egg scratching:"

It is an old art of Easter Egg engraving, and that is the art that is dying out.

I used to do a bit of egg scratching myself when it came time to celebrate the resurrection.
The correction heightens the hilarity when all is considered.

Some outsiders with good intentions have gone into Poverty stricken African communities and have given them the tools to do this. The people helping then pay the people for them and sell them elsewhere. Sometimes some machining is involved and the outsiders will have that done before or after the designs are done.

I have a beautiful ostrich egg made in one such community.
