It all adds up. Truly horrible math for the people of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia.
Trump is doing Putin's bidding, trying to weaken NATO, trying to encourage the UK to stay the fuck out of European politics, trying to focus attention on a phantom menace at home (immigrants) so that Putin can move the Russia troops he has massed on the border into the Baltic States. And no one in the GOP Congress and no one in the White House will do a god damned thing about it.

When asked whether he would defend the Baltic States, Trump said
he would have to review whether the Baltics had met their defense-spending commitments before hed consider defending them from a Russian invasion.
And now he has just called upon NATO nations to increase their spending. Presumably so that he can justify not intervening when Russia invades the Baltics on the grounds that they did not pay their fair share.
Also note:
On Monday (July 9), Defense One reported on satellite imagery that showed Russia has fortified military structures in Kaliningrad, a Russian province sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania in the Baltic Sea. In April, Russia conducted a dramatic three-day missile exercise near NATO territorial waters, something that forced a partial closure of Latvian airspace.
Everyone who stood against the Soviet Union--and that includes the Republicans precious Ronald Reagan---is rolling over in their graves. Trump is helping Putin raise the Iron Curtain again.

(19,240 posts)I expect that Putin plans to tell Trump in private about the diversionary tactic they have planned--something will blow up somewhere to get all the reporters' attention and then Russia will sneak in to the Baltics. 9/11 but bigger, meaner, uglier.
Meaning that if/when something newsworthy happens "out of the blue" reporters need to be ready to descend upon the Baltic States en masse because that will be where the real action is. With a very narrow window of opportunity.
Where will the diversion be? Probably in Europe since Putin will want NATO too busy to think about the Baltics.

(19,240 posts)Wonder if Trump has considered the possibility that Putin won't tell him the real diversion that Russia will set up....because the real diversion will be aimed at Trump himself. He has outlived his usefulness to his Russian masters and I am sure that Putin would prefer Pence at this point. An attack on Trump would be ample distraction to allow Putin to invade the Baltic States AND Poland, if he felt like it. If I were Trump, I would come back to DC and stay in Cheney's bunker until indicted by Mueller.

(2,301 posts)He can cut off the Baltics from the rest of NATO by occupying the Suwalki gap and then dare NATO to dislodge them, though.

(154 posts)Going to visit with my Latvian-American father-in-law who spends 4-6 weeks there every summer in the home he grew up in. Some of our best friends are my wifes cousins that have lived through Soviet times and now free Latvia. All of my adult children will be there for some or all of the time highlighted by my sons performance on the closing stage for the Baltics largest summer rock/pop and arts festival. Im sad that this might be our last visit and terrified for my relatives. I guess Im discounting the possibility that an invasion would unfold in the next 2 weeks.
Im so pissed at Trump, the republicans and all those who did not vote to prevent this way too real of a possibility😡😢😜😫😢😱
