KEY RACE: Heather Milam for AL Secretary of State
On a quiet street in Childersburg, Alabama—a town tucked on the Coosa River in the lower part of Talladega County—Heather grew up with a community that fed her passion for public service and success. Her parents, who both worked full-time, taught her the value of hard work. Along with her sister, they placed enormous value on public education, long conversations at the dinner table, service through their local church, and a commitment to family and friends.
Heather graduated from Childersburg High School then went on to graduate from Auburn University with two Bachelor of Arts degrees. She’s had a 15-year career in publishing and marketing, including seven years in an entrepreneurial role running a local media company. She earned her Master’s degree from Birmingham Southern College. She facilitates entrepreneurial training with Co.Starters, an innovative training program based out of Chattanooga. Heather also teaches business management at the Stephens College of Business at the University of Montevallo.
Heather has volunteered as a board member for several nonprofits, focused on issues including health, education, the arts, and the environment. In fact, she and her husband, Kris, met while volunteering together on the same nonprofit board.
Heather and Kris live in the Crestwood neighborhood of Birmingham with their two rescue dogs, Oskar and Atticus.
