(19,187 posts)present your back to the Queen. You walk out of a room backward if you have to, but having your back to her front is considered extremely poor etiquette. At least that's how it was explained to me. What a noxious turd.

The photo showed everybody seated around a coffee table in a garish gold over-decorated room. On the table for refreshments there were -- bottles of Trump Water. No tea service. No coffee service. No cookies or other snacks.
I looked hard at that picture. I blew it up. Yeah -- Trump Water.
My thought at the time was similar to yours: the most humble peasant in a mud hut would have felt obligated to do better than that for a guest, even if all he had was fruit on a banana leaf to offer.
Right now on this trip abroad, Trump looks like a shaky old man who can barely ambulate. A lot of us think he has dementia and is losing his grip as we watch.
But he has never had any class to lose. Just no class at all.

(9,886 posts)the man with ever fiber of my being, why wasn't he briefed? (Maybe he was, in which case I take it back.) But he doesn't know what he's supposed to do. None of us would. It's not like we have something similar here. I'd prefer to make fun of him for true buffoonery, of which there is plenty, not natural human foibles.

(4,033 posts)We've watched a LOT of British TV and according to that there is a protocol officer who explains the proper protocol for meeting with the Queen. Of course if it takes more than about 15 seconds, Trump's mind (which I think is smaller than his hands) would wander off to go pick daisies or something.

That's what a normal person would do.
If you're meeting the Queen, or going to a military function, you spend a few minutes to help ensure you don't look like a fucking buffoon.
Stop excusing his buffoonery.

(24,259 posts)I think most Americans, especially the over 50 crowd, were taught to be courteous and polite and to have good manners, 'especially' towards the elderly. Heck, even my young grandchildren are more courteous and have better manners than Trump obviously does. Either he wasn't taught them or he thinks he's above them. I'm guessing the more the later from what I've seen of his actions.
This wasn't just a protocol goof. This was just plain rude and bad manners which is typical Trump... well, unless you're Putin or some other alpha male dictator type that he admires.

(61,539 posts)He was 15 minutes late to arrive. He walked in front of her. These are serious and obvious breaches of etiquette. He did this on purpose.
He bowed to the Saudis but didn't incline his head for the queen. These are deliberate attempts to show disrespect. This is cheap mobster behavior. Trump thinks he's being clever.
Remember when he threw candy at Angela Merkel? Trump is scared of female leaders so he acts our.
KentuckyWoman
(6,679 posts)It looks like he's trying to be polite and slow down for her since she is having quite a lot of trouble getting around. Unfortunately he has no clue where they are going next, doesn't have any graciousness about him, and when he accidentally ends up out front just stops and makes her go around him.
Someone with more awareness and grace would have stood back to have her pass in front over the other side if that was necessary. Simply in deference to her age and mobility challenges.....

(82,849 posts)You can bet someone tried to tell him what he was supposed to do, he got impatient and waved the hapless protocol person away because he doesn't need to be told what to do all the time, and he has a very good brain, and why are you still standing there I told you to am-scray!
Then he gets out on the parade ground and doesn't have the first clue about what he's doing, and the Queen has to coach him every step of the way.

(5,730 posts)Normal manners - taught to most children - would serve him better than the behavior he exhibited here. And I am sad to say that it might well have been deliberate as well as boorish. He literally thinks he is King of the World.

(7,521 posts)I'm not up on etiquette, but in formal situations, wouldn't politeness dictate you're not supposed to wander in front of any woman you're accompanying...unless it's to shield her from a runaway golden carriage?
But...I don't think Trump agrees.

(5,101 posts)Normally, he should have been briefed by the Protocol Department.
Royal protocols are much stricter than in a republic.
The one of the English royalty is one of the strictest.
Either he will only have listened halfway, or he was deliberately given the minimum amount of information.
It's unfortunate, but obviously, everyone's doing their best to make him trip over himself!
I really don't remember a leader being as disrespected as Trump! He's truly the laughingstock of the world!

(14,525 posts)As stated many times in this thread, any of us would be able to meet the Queen w/o causing such an uproar. He managed to meet the Saudi king, so why not the Queen? Because he was pissed at the protests, so he made her pay.
Right now he is laughing at the headlines and saying something along the lines of: I sure showed them that I am the one in power. I control the day.
