Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will campaign together in Kansas

By David Weigel
July 13 at 4:59 PM

Excerpts:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will make campaign swing through Kansas next week, rallying for two congressional candidates who argue that left-wing politics are the key to winning in red states.

Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez will head into Kansas on July 20, beginning with a rally in the Kansas City suburbs for Brent Welder, a former Sanders delegate now seeking the Democratic nomination in the 3rd Congressional District. They’ll continue to Wichita, where James Thompson, who narrowly lost a special election in 2017, is seeking another chance to win the 4th Congressional District.

Sanders, who first talked to Ocasio-Cortez the day after she won her upset primary victory in New York, said that the tour came about after both of them realized they wanted to head to Kansas.

“All over this country, you have people who understand that we need to understand the minimum wage to a living wage; that health care is a right; that we need to rebuild our infrastructure,” Sanders said. “Those are popular issues in the Bronx. These are popular issues in Vermont. In Kansas, they’ve gone through the [former Governor Sam] Brownback agenda, and they do not believe you should give tax breaks to the rich and cut Social Security.”

Lay out the Democratic platform and what it offers to the people of Kansas. Do it in Kansas, talking to the local Kansas media, without the Fox filter. Do you like the idea of getting paid more money? Worker productivity has gone up substantially in the last 40 years, but worker wages have remained stagnant. All that wealth generated by labor has gone somewhere, but it hasn't gone into the pockets of the people who created it. We can change that.

Do you like having your doctor visits covered, even if you're going in for treatment of a pre-existing condition? That's a Democratic accomplishment, and Republicans would like to take it away from you. Would you like to see your tax dollars going to fix roads and upgrade your schools, or do you think your tax dollars are better spent being whisked out of the Treasury and funneled into the pockets of the already wealthy? Vote Democratic, and spend your tax dollars on things that directly benefit you instead of waiting for some overrich fat cat to decide to trickle it back down.

Generate some local excitement, encourage Democrats in Kansas to keep up the battle, and maybe change a few minds. Because writing off states like Kansas as hopeless backwaters hasn't worked for decades.

If Sanders had adopted AOC's complete platform, he may have done better in the primary.
