2. Why on earth would one of the Russians defect? That's insane. They're safe in Russia

and will probably be awarded medals by Putin. If they "defect" to the US or to a country with an extradition treaty they'd be arrested and charged with felonies per the indictments, and if convicted would spend years in prison. There's no sane reason why they'd ever want to leave Russia.

11. If they are deep cover in the US and have friends and family here, they may want to defect.

Otherwise, they never see their friends and family again. USSR placed lots of mobsters in the Us and then after the fall of the iron curtain, Russia used those moles for their organized criminal activities. These guys will not want to go "home" to the home that despised them and exiled them. So there is a very good chance that when Congressional Republicans are asking for the names of Muellers witnesses, it is because Russia wants to find out if any of its own people in the US have distant relatives at home in Russia that can be threatened.

12. I don't think these Russians were ever moles working in the U.S.

They are cyber experts and probably never had to leave Russia for a minute in order to do their hacking, nor is it likely that they have family or other connections here. Moles are old-school spycraft. I'm sure there are some around, but these guys were almost certainly Russia-based, doing all their work via the Internet.
