Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSpeculation is rampant about who the congressman is that is referenced in the Mueller indictments.
I have seen several unsourced stories that suggest it is Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. I cant help thinking that this unthinkable is very much possible.
Paul Ryans retirement from congress is simply not reasonable. He is/was at the height of his career. So he decides to call it quits? I suspect that he knows he is going to be indicted. He may well be the congressman that asked Russia via Gusifer 2.0 for dirt on a political opponent.
He may be one of the few who is getting inside information on the Mueller investigation, at least enough info to know where the rocks are going to fall.
What Ryan should be doing is running for the US Senate against Tammy Baldwin, not retiring. I suspect he is a very scared person at this point, a wall may be about fall on him.

(23,946 posts)I would think using illegally obtained information from a foreign government in order to undermine your political opponents in a forthcoming election would be a crime itself. And impeachable.
It could be many, many indictments...the extent of the treachery will shock and awe.

Another one to watch is Jason Chaffetz. In Utah the Stench is still hanging in the air.

(3,363 posts)a Florida candidate. My guess is either Brian Mast, Matt Gaetz, or Ron DeSantis.
Gaetz is currently my top pick because of his ties to Roger Stone, his unrelenting attacks on Mueller, and the fact that Trump out of no where praised him on twitter before the indictments dropped.

His primary opponent was also the subject of an illegal attack mailer just this week. He's no stranger to down and dirty.

(19,549 posts)The indictment says, "then-registered state lobbyist and online source of political news" who received 2.5 gigabytes of data stolen from the DCCC, including "donor records and personal identifying information for more than 2,000 Democratic donors."
The WSJ reported last year on Aaron Nevins and this very thing.
Ten days later, Mr. Nevins received 2.5 gigabytes of Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee documents, some of which he posted on a blog called HelloFLA.com that he ran using a pseudonym.
Soon after, the hacker sent a link to the blog article to Roger Stone, a longtime informal adviser to then-candidate Donald Trump, along with Mr. Nevins analysis of the hacked data.
Mr. Nevins confirmed his exchanges after The Wall Street Journal identified him first as the operator of the HelloFLA blog and then as the recipient of the stolen DCCC data. The Journal also reviewed copies of exchanges between the hacker and Mr. Nevins. That the obscure blog had received hacked Democratic documents was previously known, but not the extent of the trove or the bloggers identity.
I just threw an arrow in the dark, Mr. Nevins said in an interview, adding he set up a Dropbox account so whoever was using the Guccifer 2.0 name could send large amounts of material. Later, going through what the hacker sent as someone who actually knows what some of these documents mean, the GOP consultant said he realized it was a lot more than even Guccifer knew that he had.

The information he gained went to GOP Reps. Carlos Curbelo, Ron DeSantis and Brian Mast, from what I could tell last year when when this broke. None of them had to request information themselves because their surrogate had it in hand already.
I'll mention here, Nevins claimed last year he was not being investigated by the Mueller team after the WSJ story broke. I've not seen any comment from him (which I admit I may have missed) yet in regards to the indictment yesterday. To be fair, I'm sure he's busy getting his affairs in order.

(127,312 posts)Ryan got what he wanted - the tax cuts for the wealthy but also found himself in the same position as Cheeto Boner when it came to dealing with the teabaggers. His leaving gives him ample opportunity to make lots of $$$ playing at being a "wonk".

(73,333 posts)First, the indictment only says some republican running for Congress; it is possible they lost. However, it is at least equally likely they won. And when one considers the list of possibilities that raises, it is difficult to do more than speculate and hope. But we will find out, very soon.

(43,085 posts)It didnt even say Republican, although its well believed Florida GOP operative Aaron Nevins is involved.
Im telling you now, everything about Tim Canova, the DWS primary challenger, is screaming at me here.
Phony Democrat, meant to disrupt and divide, has since quit the party, has gone out of his way to dispute Russian involvement, is a guest on right wing radio shows and on RT, has pushed Seth Rich conspiracy theories and claims he was the email leaker, and most importantly stood the most to gain from any DNC email hack that could be used to embarrass his opponent who was the DNC chair.
Dont discount Canova as the person.
