RUBIO to introduce #FakeFamilyLeave bill next week that robs Social Security to pay for family leave
The bill robs money from social security for family leave, forcing families to have to wait longer to retire because they have less social security.
The damned bill is a deeply flawed, incomplete plan for a paid leave program. Here are the highlights of this terrible proposal:
• It raids Social Security. The plan diverts money from the Social Security Trust Fund to provide new parents with income to support them after the birth of their child. This will lead to Social Security running out of money years sooner.
• It doesn't cover most caregiving needs. Seventy-five percent of individuals who seek FMLA to fulfill family caregiver duties, or recover from a serious illness or procedure, are left out in the cold.
• People who use leave would have to retire later. In exchange for receiving benefits up front for parental leave, working parents would in turn delay the ability to draw their Social Security for months, even years, each time they use leave throughout their careers.
The Rubio plan is #FakePaidLeave. But a real paid leave plan already exists—the FAMILY Act would establish a national paid family and medical leave insurance program, covering all types of paid leave needs, not just parental leave. The FAMILY Act would help families build their wealth for retirement, not delay it.
