Nixon had a much better sense of politics and lots more experience. Nixon was better at dealing with the press. But Trump seems to have a following that is more loyal and will believe anything he says. (although Nixon's supporters strongly believed him too, but they were not the "cult" that I see with Trump) Also, Nixon had a somewhat long period without him being involved with a scandal, although his vice president was forced to resign. Nixon lied a lot, as does Trump. (secret plan to get us out of Viet Nam). Nixon had nothing like the immigrant problem and locking up children like Trump has. I hated Nixon and I hate Trump. Nixon had some years without controversy, Trump has had almost no time without controversy. ..What else? Your opinion especially those that lived through the Nixon times and Watergate.

(115,676 posts)He was quite corrupt, but being much smarter he was better at hiding it. Unlike Trump, he understood how government worked, and sometimes did useful things with it (like the EPA) instead of actively trying to destroy it. He had some nasty personal grudges but he did not publicize them. If he had had Twitter I doubt very much that he would have aired all of his personal grievances on a daily basis. I think he was vindictive toward his enemies but he never struck me as being gratuitously and deliberately cruel like Trump. He also understood the need for rational international diplomacy, and he didn't shit all over our allies just so he could feel like he'd "won" something. Trump is incapable of strategy while Nixon was good at it. Nixon was bad, no question. But Trump is far more dangerous because his black hole of narcissism causes him to do crazy things.

(6,137 posts)nixon wasnt trying to commit treason. Trump isnt even trying, he doing it. Nixon would not have faced death penalty for what he did. Also he was not a white supremacist to my knowledge. Any comparison between the two minimzes the gravity of trumps actions.

(6,709 posts)negotiating with a foreign power to prolong a war, and thereby improve his chances of winning the election while being responsible for more American (and Vietnamese) deaths?
And btw Nixon was a bigot, anti-semitic, and a dishonest, corrupt mofo...restrained by a Democratic Congress and norms that were still observed at least in public. Also miles smarter than the tangerine wankmaggot.

(115,676 posts)And what was later called the "Chennault affair" was his deliberate sabotage of Johnson's peace initiatives in Vietnam just before the 1968 election to ensure Humphrey would lose. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/08/06/nixon-vietnam-candidate-conspired-with-foreign-power-win-election-215461 If that wasn't treason it was damn close.
Trump is actually worse, if that's imaginable.

(17,387 posts)If Nixon had the RW media apparatus that Trump benefits from, Nixon would not have been impeached and we might have had the Constitutional crisis then that we are having now. It is that simple.

Major credit to mcconell and ryan.

(3,491 posts)Corrupt, heavy handed and dishonest for sure but he was smart, very well informed and competent in the job. Many people do not realize his importance in the ending of the Cold War. Reagan gets all this credit but it was Nixon who did all the work in Russia. He was the backchannel for years.
In terms of abuse of power the two might be comparable but Nixon was not a traitor nor stupid nor ignorant.

(5,101 posts)As questionable as was Nixon, at least, he wasn't a traitor to his country, he had some values, and he was intelligent and educated.
Nixon is remembered for the Watergate scandal and his authoritarism but he did some good things too. EPA, Clean Air Act amendment, OSHA, ...
It's hard to compare Trump to Nixon. In my opinion, there's nothing to compare. Trump is nothing more than zero !
This said, I'm not at all fan of Nixon.

(11,730 posts)Nixon was smarter, more adept at politics, and more malicious than Trump at least in regards to the larger picture items. Trump is a narcissistic, small minded criminal. Trump has one MAJOR (in ways that cannot be overestimated) advantage that Nixon lacked, and this is not anything internal to Trump who is really just an ignorant bigot who understands how to use this one advantage.
The advantage that Trump has is a whole media ecosystem designed to carry right wing messaging and force it into the mainstream. Again, this cannot be overstated. Nixon was capable of so much more malice and treachery, but he had to contend with a media that at the time was still predicated somewhat on serving the public good and Nixon HATED that. So did his media consultant Roger Ailes who with Nixon were formulating what Ailes would later introduce, almost 20 years later as Fox News.
Seriously, without Fox News and the right wing media system that it has spawned, Trump would be a fringe element character or maybe would have remained a failed celebrity business person. To be sure, there were right wing thinkers and commentators like William F Buckley Jr. who had his National Review all the way back in 1955, but it was easy to identify what was Right Wing, Left Wing, and Mainstream. Everyone operated on the same set of facts and the difference was in the interpretation of those facts. Buckley Jr would debate Gore Vidal and James Baldwin among others, about the ins and outs of the conservative v. liberal viewpoint, but they argued from the same information. Fox News turned that paradigm on its ear and now a conservative can go, and mostly chooses to go their whole life only hearing information that conforms to their way of thinking.
The Fox playbook has had such an out sized impact that you have the mainstream media scrambling to include the conservative viewpoint as "just another point of view" so that they do not appear biased. Had Nixon had the level of media support that Fox New has created for the right wing today, he would have done unspeakable things to the United States. He just had no support from the media or from his own party in the end. Republicans in Nixon's time understood that the Saturday Night Massacre and the exposure of the tapes showing Nixon's knowledge and cover up of the Watergate break in were bad for the country and bad for the Republican Party and so aided in his removal from office. Republicans today either believe because they consume right wing media, or have to contend with (because their constituents consume only right wing media) the fact that Trump maintains a rabidly loyal base that can create problems for them in their primaries and the general election. They are either complicit in the lies and cover up, or they are scared to do anything for fear of retribution.
Look at any right wing site or the posts of your right wing friends/former friends and family members on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media and you will see that there is a whole segment of American society that appears to be receiving their own "set of facts" which are completely detached from reality. This is what allows Trump to operate the way he has. It isn't his smarts, media savvy, or any other internal quality. It is that he has a whole system designed to promote his message.
