During the restoration post Civil War the South was never really punished for it's betrayal of the union. The urge to get the country together as one nation was strong, understandable, but not making those who tore the country apart pay for their crimes did more harm than good. The decades that followed is proof with their Jim Crow laws and the violence they inflicted on their fellow Americans which much of it continues to this day.
This is what I'm reminded of today.
The reason I'm thinking about it is because in today's Republican party we have a so-called president who threw the US under the bus and celebrated his man-crush with Putin. No matter how critical other republicans and Faux Noise has been, it will be business as usual.
They will continue to undermine our country, its institutions and the rule of law. They will continue to betray the United States in favor of kowtowing to their base no matter where it takes them, even to the act of treason in it's vilest forms.
At some point, who knows when, tRump will eventually be out of office, whether it's impeachment or just voted out altogether. The Dems will rebound and take some semblance of control back. I truly believe that.
However, what will not happen is all those who conspired, who abetted, who enabled and who paved the way for this atrocity on our country will never pay for what they've done in letting tRump run roughshod over those who couldn't fight for themselves, over our allies and spit at everything this country stands for.
I'm sad to say that the United States is forever fractured, injured as a result of it's unwillingness to do what needed done when it comes to those who hurt the US. If history is any indication, some with the best of intentions, will try to pull America together and heal the wounds.
Healing doesn't just happen by closing the wound. It happens by getting rid of the infection in the first place.
Those in power that encouraged tRump, aided him in undermining the country, must pay a price. Whether it's imprisonment, losing all the power they were gifted with or stole, or even shamed to the point of losing their political careers.
My fear is that once tRump is out of office, business as usual will continue. Those who stood by tRump will continue on as before. Should a Dem get the WH, we will be right back at the same divisiveness as before if not worse.
Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

(15,751 posts)Some anti-bribery legislation passed, in lieu of going after all sorts of corrupt practices. Business [corruption] as usual continued.

(31,011 posts)I hadn't thought of that one.
I've always been fascinated with post Civil War history. The South never really paid for what they did. Maybe that's where it all began.
Thanks.

(1,989 posts)Typically a party only has two years for pure government control (legislative and executive). The Democrats need to have a list of judges ready to go and legislation that limits radio, TV and internet ownership by of any one company. I would like to see some form of the fairness doctrine introduced. Somehow, Right wing media moguls should pay. I believe this is the root cause of our current situation. The southern strategy has been successfully implemented through right wing propaganda.
