Live stream: Former president Barack Obama gives first major speech since leaving office

SOUTH AFRICA - Former president Barack Obama makes his first major speech since leaving office on Tuesday morning.

He will be addressing inequality and other issues while giving a speech at the 2018 Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture.

The event has taken place in honor of its founder, Nelson Mandela, every year since 2003.

Global leaders have used the lecture to raise topical issues affecting South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world. This year's theme will be “Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World.”

without naming any names. Talks about the rise in strongman politics, which contradict the vision of Mandela, Gandhi, King et al.

He warned against the kind of politics we see in Trumpism and other similar movements in the world (without naming Trump), and warned against the tendency to create lies in the place of truth, to ignore facts. He warned against racism. He called people to love, to working together, to building up, to peace.

I just love that man.

This was a speech in memory of Nelson Mandela, in front of a huge crowd in South Africa, in front of South Africa's president and other dignitaries. It was an inspirational speech, and it was sufficiently clear about the need to reject the kind of politics we see on the ascendance today in Trump but also in other locations than the US. Surely you do not suggest that he should have made this speech about Trump explicitly? This was not the occasion for that.
