The Salt Lake Tribune Urges Huntsman to Resign

Huntsman Urged to Resign

July 17, 2018 at 8:38 am EDTBy Taegan Goddard

The Salt Lake Tribune, which is owned by U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman’s brother Paul, has a column calling on Jon Huntsman to quit his post:

As Utahns, many of us were a bit stunned last year when you accepted the job as U.S. ambassador to Russia, but your explanation made sense: It was a role you took on, much like your tenure in China, out of a deep sense of duty.

But that duty is to your country and the best way now to serve your country is not by holding on to some title and being the emissary of a president who doesn’t share your values, or American values, for that matter.

It’s by resigning immediately and speaking out against a president who attacks our allies, gives comfort to our adversaries and undermines our moral standing, our commitment to democratic ideals and our interest in human rights every time he opens his gaping mouth.

You know he's not actually being used for diplomacy. They've got other channels for that. Tommy_Carcetti Jul 2018 #2

His political career would seem to be over if he elects to stay as the ambassador.

Huntsman struck me as being somewhat reasonable as far as Republicans go, but it's clear he's being used as a patsy by Trump. He's like the Maytag repairman at this point.

To my great surprise, this mural is not by Thomas Hart Benton.

Kansas State Capitol - Online tour - Tragic Prelude

Second Level

Tragic Prelude by John Steuart Curry, second floor rotunda, east wing

Tragic Prelude

To the right of the hall Curry painted the image of conquistadors. Curry depicts Coronado and the Spanish explorers of 1541 with Father Padilla, called the first Christian martyr in the United States. Padilla ministered to American Indians who had grown to love him. Legends say Padilla felt his mission was complete and wanted to move on, he was stoned to death rather than to be allowed to leave.

To the left Curry painted the image of a frontiersman with a buffalo at his feet, while a herd of buffalo can be seen in the back.

Curry’s interpretation of John Brown and the antislavery movement in Kansas Territory before the Civil War, is considered one of his best murals. Rich in symbolism, the painting depicts John Brown as an important, albeit fanatic man who would kill for his beliefs. In 1859 Brown was hanged for treason after leading a raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia.

{snip, it's the mural you've just seen}

Tragic PreludeThe tornado and prairie fires represent the storms of war that gathered and the fires of war that swept the land. The men on either side of Brown symbolize the brother against brother conflict of the Civil War. The two dead men at his feet represent the more than one million soldiers and civilians who were either killed or wounded during the war. Curry’s critics disliked his color scheme and the overall menacing effect of the mural.

On-topic, I have a high regard for John Huntsman. I have done so for some time.
