Mom allegedly abandoned newborn in dumpster
Hurst (Texas) Police announced on Monday the arrest of a 28-year-old woman accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a dumpster last month. Police said Alyssa Hazel Baker went to her workplace at Souper Salad and gave birth to a baby inside the bathroom on the morning of June 15, according to an arrest affidavit.
When a coworker went to check on Baker because she had not come out of the restroom, she said she was fine and "just needed a pair of scissors," the document said. Police said that after Baker delivered the baby, she placed it in a black trash bag and put it in the dumpster behind the business.
Believing that Baker had a miscarriage, a concerned co-worker called paramedics who arrived at the scene with police, the arrest affidavit states. A police officer who spoke to Baker in the ambulance asked her if there was a baby or fetus in the dumpster. Baker responded something to the effect of "yeah I probably shouldn't have done that," according to the document.
The baby was transported to a local hospital and is in good condition, NBC 5 reports.
Baker was arrested on Saturday and charged with attempted capital murder. She is currently being held at Travis County Jail with a bond set at $50,000.
