July 17, 2018 at 11:37 am EDTBy Taegan Goddard
CNN: Immediately after his news conference, Trumps mood was buoyant, people familiar with the matter said. He walked off stage in Helsinki with little inkling his remarks would cause the firestorm they did, and was instead enthusiastic about what he felt was a successful summit.
By the time hed returned to the White House just before 10 p.m. ET on Monday, however, his mood had soured. Predictably, the President was upset when he saw negative coverage of the summit airing on television aboard Air Force One. It was clear he was getting little support, even from the usual places.

(58,785 posts)strong traits of?
Trump's been shoving himself onto the public stage since he was a young man, and literally thousands of peculiar and dysfunctional behaviors have been documented on film, audio, written interviews, his own supposed books, and court documents over more than 4 decades. And still are, as in this thread.
His dad had dementia, and Trump could of course have inherited it, but we're really not seeing any new behaviors that could be ascribed to onset of dementia but not of ongoing personality disorder,
Trump'd fall under the cluster B group of characteristics. Obviously. Even though various traits are grouped under 4 general diagnoses on this site, any of the traits might be manifested in various witches' brews of disorder, and many not. They can be relatively mild to sociopathic.

(3,479 posts)but there's little doubt that he has experienced major cognitive deterioration (bordering on dementia) as he has gotten older. If anything, his mental decline has made it harder for Trump to hide his true repulsive nature from the public.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)and there may have been some deterioration over part of the last 40 years, but it could also be partly slopping over the years into patterns that work for him. We don't know if his reported severe problems with concentration and lack of interest in anything he doesn't relate to himself have gotten worse over the decades, but he's always been that way. Forget reading; his fund of knowledge has always been a relatively null set.
We know that for his first 3 decades in business his father repeatedly kept him from ruining himself. And, of course, many of those thousands of lawsuits he's been involved in for cheating and so on were piled up long ago.
Here's a good one: How about 30 years of inspiring Doonsbury cartoons? Garry Trudeau tried to ignore him for the first few years, but he would never go away and was always pushing his bizarre, attention-seeking behaviors into public discussion, so finally he became a cartoon character. And still is.
He didn't want his newborn son, Don, Jr., to be named after him because, "What if he turns out to be a loser?" Yes, that concern did turn out to be justified, but!
If he's deteriorated so badly, from what?

him out of financial difficulties of his own stupidity.
His money, lawyers and staff lackeys continued that lack of accountability on into "mature" adulthood. His WH continues ass-kissery to this day so of course he doesn't know when he's committed treason.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)been something of a factor. But that doesn't mean he can't have a personality disorder that caused these behaviors in the first place. I also think it's a really bad idea to think disordered people are normal. Sets a very low standard for judging all of us. And in Trump's case it could conceivably lead to use of WMD. Best we see him for whatever he is.
Personality problems are so common that it's sort of understandable if some who've never been close to someone with a disabling disorder don't realize they can be more than just assholism. Not only can these people not help themselves, these disorders are still mostly effectively incurable by professionals and helpful treatments extremely limited to effectively nonexistent.
Btw, does anyone really doubt that if The Donald had inherited a Taco Bell franchise he would have run it into the ground in short order, been fired for cause from every job he didn't quit first, managed to cheat his way onto welfare various times, married women in order to mooch off and abuse them until they dumped him, abandoned every child he fathered, and done time in prison more than once because he'd much rather cheat and hurt people than not?

(15,805 posts)People experiencing delusions of grandeur see themselves as great, highly accomplished, more important than others, or even magical. The delusion may be persistent, or it may appear only periodically.
Some people with delusions of grandeur also experience other delusions, such as a fear of persecution or unusual religious beliefs.
However, a delusion of grandeur is more than just very high self-esteem or an inflated sense of self-importance. It marks a significant disconnection from the real world. A person with delusions of grandeur may continue to believe in the delusion in spite of contradictory evidence."

Dont get the people started who had to actually try to educate her and bring her up to speed on facts, figures, world leaders and history. She had ZERO interest in actually knowing any of that. She preferred her own brand of word salad and rebuffed any attempts to educate her.
tRump is exactly like that. He thinks he is the smartest guy ever to draw breath. He doesnt (or cant) read and shows no interest in increasing his base knowledge. If you ever listen to him (god forbid), he speaks in generalities with few specifics. When he does use specifics he often gets them wrong or just makes up stuff to try to sound like he knows what he is talking about.
They make quite the pair. I wont say what that is. But they are quite a pair of something.

(17,862 posts)since the meeting was off the record (imagine two world leaders meeting off the record especially when both are suspected of working together illegally of fixing the election for one of them).
If he had some work product from the meeting. Like a signed agreement, even one on a cocktail napkin, then he could claim something.
As of now no one knows what was agreed to.

(8,311 posts)Lifton: Thats absolutely true. Its absolutely true. And for anyone with these traits of feeling himself victimized, of seeking to be the strongman who resolves everything, yet sees truth only through his own self and negates all other truth outside of it is bound to become much more malignant when he has power. Thats what Judith Herman is saying, and shes absolutely right. Power then breeds an intensification of all this because the power can never be absolute power to some extent its stymied but the isolation while in power becomes even more dangerous. Think of it as a vicious circle. The power intensifies these tendencies and the tendencies become more dangerous because of the power.
Moyers: But suppose that if Donald Trump is crazy, as some have said, hes crazy like a fox, which is to say all this bizarre behavior is really clever strategy to mislead, distract and deceive others into responding in precisely the manner that he wants them to.
Lifton: I dont think thats quite true. I think that its partly true. As I said before, Trump both disbelieves and believes in falsehoods, so that when he did thrive on his longstanding and perhaps most egregious falsehood the claim that Obama was not born in the United States hes crazy like a fox in manipulating it because it gave him his political entrée onto the national stage and also, incidentally, was not rejected by many leading Republicans. So he was crazy like a fox in that case. But its more extreme even than that. In order to make your falsehoods powerful, you have to believe in them in some extent. And thats why we simplify things if we say that Trump either believes nothing in his falsehoods and is just manipulating us like a fox or he completely believes them. Neither is true. The combination of both and his talent as a manipulator and falsifier are very much at issue.

(43,140 posts)he was taking a diplomatic high road. That he was totally unaware of the correct posture when dealing with geopolitical adversaries shows just how stupid, ignorant, and poorly suited for the job of president he really is. He has the emotional maturity of a middle schooler, and a mind to match. He doesn't really DO anything. He decides, and pays others to do his bidding.

(349 posts)My three ideas about Trump's latest blunders:
(1) I think Putin has recordings of their "private" meeting, possibly even video from the wired translator. (BTW, I'm pretty sure Putin has little need for an English-Russian translator.)
(2) I'm sure Putin played Trump like a toy drum. Whatever Putin wanted Trump to say, Trump said it, and some more besides. Trump probably revealed top secret information or worse, and Putin has proof.
(3) Perhaps Trump had already started to realize how badly he had phucked up and that's why he was so flustered in the post-meeting presser.
