(14,304 posts)Special counsel Robert Mueller asks for immunity for five potential witnesses in Paul Manafort trial
Special counsel Robert Mueller is asking a judge to grant immunity from prosecution for five potential witnesses whose testimony Mueller wants to compel at the upcoming federal criminal trial of former Trumpcampaign chief Paul Manafort, according to a court filing Tuesday.
The five individuals would either refuse to take the witness stand against Manafort, or refuse to answer questions because of their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination if they are not granted immunity and compelled to testify with that protection from prosecution, according to Mueller's filing in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va.
Mueller has also asked Judge T.S. Ellis to seal from public view the court motions detailing the witnesses' identities.
"The five individuals identified in the motions at issue are third parties who have not been charged in this matter, and who have not been identified publicly with the case," Mueller's team argued in a filing asking for that sealing order. "Disclosing the motions would reveal those individuals involvement in the investigation and the trial, thereby creating the risk of their undue harassment.'
....
"Sealing is also appropriate because the information contained in the motions could lead to reputational harm," prosecutors wrote. Mueller's team noted that if the individuals do testify at Manafort's trial, their identities would become public.

(2,886 posts)if these mystery witnesses are granted immunity and still refuse to testify, do they go to jail?
Not a lawyer and just wondering...

(14,530 posts)Much like the guilty pleas, if they violate the terms of the agreement, the deal is off.

(8,138 posts)they are being 'compelled to testify'. I think they can't claim the 5th if they face no punishment for self-incrimination. So i think they would be in contempt if they still refused to answer questions.
That's what I've seen on TV anyway!

(32,634 posts)I'm thinking Mueller is trying to get people from the early days of the campaign.
In the beginning there were only a few people running things, like Hope Hicks, Corey Lewandowski, maybe Priebus. They would have all known something was up with the Russians, but maybe not doing it themselves. Mueller will not give immunity to Jared Kuschner though, that's my assumption.

(8,380 posts)but Reince Priebus lost his entire career as a Republican operative. I was originally surprised he was willing to serve with Trump, because I believe he saw the danger of Trump immediately.

(12,253 posts)for Manafort to live out the remainder of his years. He & 45 both are in debt to the Russians and neither will have any way to repay what they owe. 45 was their laundress, scrubbing money for years and years, a greedy laundress that they probably already have replaced. If Russia did accept either of them as defectors, I would not make a bet on their longevity.

(2,596 posts)It's not likely he would be sent to a Supermax-type installation, which would have the capability of hindering a prison hit, or at least minimizing the chance. He will have a target on his back for the rest of his life.

(12,253 posts)I just think that being in a federal prison in the USA would give him maybe a little extra time. He owes then; they'll get him.
