This was par for the course, pun intended! The man says what he thinks in any given moment because it is what he believes. Just like this was "inadvertently" either...

“I will totally accept the results of this great and historic presidential election—if I win,”

He says what he means and does so because he thinks, and so far is correct, there will be little to no consequences.
