(51,974 posts)i think they fantasize about being able to do and get away with the crap donnie does and they live vicariously though him.
in their own lives, they likely cannot get away with it.
i think that's a big part of the appeal.
so they *would* be as corrupt and as unlawful in their personal lives *if* they thought they could get away with it. in practice, they resent having to play by "librul" rules.

(7,532 posts)being as corrupt and unlawful as Trump is an extremely high bar that I doubt most people could reach.

(4,744 posts)I know are good people. They had been brain washed to hate Hillary and believed Trump would make them rich. I know several who voted for Obama in 2008. I am sure there are Deplorables who are terrible people but I do not personally know any.

(99,915 posts)The people who I know who are hardcore Trump supporters are also the kind of people who treat their businesses like it's their personal piggy bank.

(15,501 posts)but there's one that lives in my neighborhood and he brags all the time about how he "knows people" so he doesn't have to pay his property taxes. I kid you not. He owns a business and is active in the county's Republican Party. He's one of the few people I see that still has a Trump sticker on his big ass truck. He's proud to be a deplorable.

(6,276 posts)If by "deplorable" we just mean "Trump supporter" then there's no way this can remotely be true of even a substantial minority of them (certainly lack of opportunity might be a factor for some).
It would almost be comforting if this were true - only people who are terrible in every way would support someone so awful. The truth is more complex. The vast majority of actual Nazis were likely little different from us in terms of the conduct of their personal lives. "Good" people routinely support, either actively or through studied or casual ignorance, all sorts of atrocities and forms of corruption.
Many of them simply cannot see what is plain to be seen, I suppose because it rocks their worldview. I had a colleague who was a real Eagle scout type, super religious... after the election I expressed concern about whether college students here under DACA would be targeted, and he just said the immigration enforcement would just focus on hardened criminals (my contention was that it would focus on people easily rounded up and deported). Similarly, my mother (who got brainwashed when she remarried, this time to a FOX News fanatic) simply flat-out refused to believe there were plans to step up "denaturalizations" (of people who had lied on immigration paperwork, reported in the mainstream media from the lips of administration officials) and announced she didn't want to hear any more "hate" (i.e. facts about evil things Trump is actually doing).
Neither person is personally corrupt. That doesn't make it any less scary that they are willing to turn a blind eye to corruption, lawlessness, racism, sexism, etc.
