FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: Coleman Young II for Congress MI-13

Senator Coleman A. Young II proudly represents Michigan’s 1st Senate District, which includes Detroit, Ecorse, Gibraltar, River Rouge, Riverview, Trenton, Woodhaven and Wyandotte. Since 2015, he has served as the Senate Assistant Minority Floor Leader. From 2011-2014, Senator Young served as the Senate Assistant Minority Caucus Chair.

Senator Young currently serves as Vice Chair of several committees, including: Local Government and Elections Committee; General Government Appropriations Subcommittee; Judiciary Appropriations Subcommittee; Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee and the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee. He also sits on the Appropriations Committee and the Insurance Committee. Senator Young has previously served as the Vice Chair of the Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Committee; and Reforms, Restructuring and Reinventing Committee; as well as having previously served on the Banking and Financial Institutions Committee, Education Committee; and the Energy and Technology Committee.

Born in Royal Oak, Michigan, Senator Young is the only son of former Detroit Mayor, Coleman A. Young, and former Detroit Assistant Public Works Director, Annivory Calvert. In response to death threats against his father, Senator Young was raised in California under the alias “Joel Loving”, although he was baptized as Coleman A. Young II. In 1994, Senator Young received a phone call from his father asking him to carry on the name and legacy of Coleman A. Young. As a result, the Michigan courts restored the Senator’s true name and issued a new birth certificate, bearing the name “Coleman A. Young, II”.

In 2000, Senator Young graduated as the Valedictorian of P.A.L. Charter Academy High School in San Bernardino, California. After graduating High School, Senator Young enrolled at Azusa Pacific University, while playing as a running back on the football team. After completing his Junior year of college, Senator Young transferred to Wayne State University, where he is currently finishing his degree.
Prior to being elected, Senator Young worked for Detroit City Councilwoman, JoAnn Watson, and for the Detroit City Council Research & Analysis Division. Senator Young was first elected to the Michigan Legislature in the 2006 Primary Election, after which he represented the citizens of the 4th House District for four (4) years. Now in his second term representing the citizens 1st Senate District, Senator Young has sponsored twelve (12) bills that have become law; including the “Tisha Prater Act”, which guarantees anti-discrimination protections for women affected by pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions. Senator Young has passed more bills into law than any other member of the Detroit caucus!

Senator Young currently lives in Detroit, where he is a member of St. Paul Church of God in Christ.
