A new tracking poll from Reuters/ Ipsos on Tuesday showed that rank-and-file Republicans not only continue to support President Trump but refuse to believe hes doing anything wrong. The most galling number from the survey is: 71 percent of Republicans approve of Trumps handling of Russia. That support runs counter to much of the leadership of their own party, at minimum during the Helsinki summit. The poll was put into the field following the summit, so it should pick up any quiver of movement, but there still has not been a dip in GOP support for Trumps Putin-loving approach.
Overall, more than half of those polled (55 percent) disapproved of Trumps handling of Russia and agree (59 percent) with U.S. intelligence findings about Russian attempts to tamper with the 2016 election. But, also worrying, is the fact that only 32 percent of Republicans believe that Russia attempted to intervene in the election. Not that Russia had a preference for or collaborated with the Trump campaign, just that it attempted to interfere. The Democratic figures, predictably, are more or less the inverse of the GOP numbers. But the Republican support is pretty astonishing given the response to Trumps soft touch with Putin. It drew rebukes from all corners, including Republican lawmakers, Fox News hosts, and even Trump allies, like Newt Gingrich. But it still hasnt moved the needle, according to the Reuters poll.
Among the many worrying signs of late, the failure of Republican voters to internalize Trumps transgressions shows the effectiveness of his logic-scrambling statements and a refusal to be cowed by reality, buttressed by a compliant Congress.
Heres one recent Republican that disagrees:
This Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders design that Ambition must ... counteract ambition. All who believe in this countrys values must vote for Democrats this fall. Policy differences dont matter right now. History has its eyes on us.

(15,751 posts)My wife's recent college reunion friends confirms those Slate numbers [about 2/3rds]. Explanations: most of their parents were Republican and children tend to follow the parents politically; Repubs tend to doggedly look the other way when events bother their comfort zone [more than half repubs supported Nixon until the day he resigned]; their social groups exert a silent repub pressure; fox news; . . . however, . . . the college friends seem to feel pretty uncomfortable about trump, and trump's continuing 'antics' make them feel more uncomfortable.
My speculation, knowing this group, is that various issues will erode support at the individual level, depending on their individual sensitivity to a given issue. [trump coarseness/meaness, russia is the enemy, anti women attitudes, pollution, corruption, ego, etc. ]

(10,875 posts)Republicans in total represent 40% of this country at best. In the 2016 election 90% (maybe it was a bit higher) voted for trump. Now all polling I see says 80% of Republicans, this one 70% of Republicans. Doesn't the real context represent that Republicans are peeling off from supporting the Stable Genius leading their party? Isn't the real number in this instance 70% of the 40% who vote Republican. Am I missing something? Wouldn't reporting the numbers in that context be more encouraging....for people who can't seem to understand how he still has any support at all? The die hard dead enders who still support him no matter what are the same die hard dead enders (I'm guessing about 25 -29% of the country) who still supported Bush Jr. until the end, who were the moral majority in the 80's, and the John Birchers before that. Let's not make them any more mysterious or powerful than they are....they are the same racist base the GOP has been playing to since the Southern Strategy.

(4,759 posts)70% of 40% is a miserable number and one that should have the Republican big wigs shaking in their shoes.

(10,875 posts)that's why they are pulling out their bag of dirty tricks while everyone is paying attention to the Stable Genius's performance at Helsinki...... Nancy Pelosi says the GOP is "bringing to the floor an appropriations package that eliminates funding for states to protect their election systems. - We should be screaming really loudly about this, especially now while the heat is on the GOP.... capital switchboard should be lighting up.... and Nancy should be holding a news conference exposing this. They do not have the numbers to win unless they cheat (or we stay home)....so they will cheat.
