When Khalil Cavil looked at his customer's bill Saturday night, he saw a note written on the top saying, "We don't tip terrorist." The customer at Saltgrass Steak House in Odessa had circled his name, Khalil, and left a zero in the tip field for a bill totaling $108.73.
"At the moment I didnt know what to think nor what to say, I was sick to my stomach," Cavil said on Facebook. "I share this because I want people to understand that this racism, and this hatred still exists."
Terry Turney, COO of Saltgrass Steak House, told USA TODAY in a statement that the customer responsible for the message has been banned.
"We stand by and support our employee," Turney said. "Racism of any form is unacceptable."

Hopefully those who can't be concerned about it happening to others can at least develop some self protective caution.
We all love seeing these stories of societal feedback against bigots, but it's only a matter of time before use of this technology by malicious people to attack innocent people grows obvious. Anti-discrimination and anti- harassment rules at work have long been used by discriminators to take out people they don't like, such as by hostile male coworkers against women who have been promoted into positions that were once reserved for men.

(8,311 posts)Which would REALLY make the waiter a jerk for deciding to make other servers not be believed if/when this happens to them.
Or they could have just been cheapskates, or unhappy with the service. But after being the target of a false racism accusation, of course the restaurant is going to try to unban/give them a free meal. I definitely hope Snodgrass pays its servers the regular and not tipped minimum wage, though.

(28,243 posts)Have you ever even talked to someone who has dealt with customers at a restaurant? Sure, most patrons are decent folks, but there are always a few who are assholes; there are online sites devoted solely to encounters with such assholes. Now: factor in trump's malign influence across the entire country, factor in the daily reports of open and obvious prejudice currently taking place. And my answer to your two questions is: "Yes."
Never experienced anything like that or heard from any other waitstaff who ever had something like that written on a check (and have worked with staff who were from diverse ethnic backgrounds).
What is common is creepy come-on type messages directed at young, attractive females.
They put up with a lot of crap from customers and get weird notes of that type a lot.
"We don't tip terrorist" is not something that people write on checks. Certainly not "numerous times a day" - that is preposterous.
