[A Republican state representative from Dallas unequivocally called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump in a blistering editorial published Wednesday morning.
State Rep. Jason Villalba didnt mince words in his criticism of the president who he referred to as a charlatan or his supporters, who he dubbed sordid, ugly, Trumpists who require anger and vitriol.
He opined that the political climate in the United States or at least the Republican party has become a contorted caricature created by the alt-right.
If we dont stop this man now [...] we will be equally culpable in what he has planned for our great nation, Villalba wrote.
The scathing opinion piece, published by The Texas Tribune, comes at the heels of Trumps Helsinki summit, where Trump accepted Russian President Vladimir Putins denial of meddling in the 2016 election jilting American intelligence that led to the indictment of 12 Russian nationals for allegedly hacking the Democratic National Convention.
A Russian foreign minister called the summit better than super. Trump did attempt to walk back the comments Tuesday by accepting that meddling occurred. Villalba clearly wasnt satisfied.
Our president has mocked and belittled our immigration laws, our intelligence agencies, our foreign policy strategy and even the American people, Villalba wrote.
The 47-year-old District 114 representative made clear that the editorial wasnt a denouncement of the GOP, iterating his Republican beliefs.
I believe in fiscal conservatism, American exceptionalism, a moral rubric based on Judeo-Christian values, and on a basic fealty to the essential standards set by our forefathers: truth, liberty, self-sacrifice and basic goodness, he wrote, invoking Reagans name.
And yet, today, our own president of the United States mocks these basic tenets.
Its not the first time Villalba has openly criticized the president. In a TribTalk editorial in March of 2016, he called Trump the death of the Republican party. In his Wednesday piece, he claimed he lost his bid for re-election to the Texas Legislature in March because of his opposition of the president.]

I don't live in Texas and I really don't know much about this Texas state representative. I found this news interesting and wanted to share it on DU. If one doesn't like links to the article and video, please move on.

I must point out that he, and other now "concerned" Republicans kept their yaps tightly closed about all of his other demagoguery.

I wasn't sure if there were any of the actual Republican Party left anymore.
He says he lost his re-election in March because he opposed Trump.
Have to ck his voting record to see if he's one of the once reasonable Repubs.of if he's saving his own Repub skin.
He clearly wasn't ever a fan of Trump.
Maybe a Jeb Bush guy.
Interesting article..

(1,148 posts)It was always the racists who put Republicans in power and they know it- the only difference is that Trump explicitly acknowledges and caters to them.

(10,749 posts)You just have to question the intelligence, and more, of people who didn't see this in 2015, 2016, 2017, or any time before this weekend in 2018.
By his words and actions over 40 years, trump told us who and what he was - a racist, bigot, white supremacist, crook, con man, sexual predator, and so much more. Some 63 million people saw that. Why didn't this guy?
Was his moral compass not working when trump railed against the Central Park Five some 30 years ago? Too young? He could have looked it up on the internet.
Was he okay with trump grabbing women by the pussy? How did he explain that to his three kids?
Within weeks of taking office, trump ridiculed our intelligence community in the lobby of the CIA, in front of the wall commemorating American intelligence officers who died during service to this country. That must have been just fine with Mr. Villalba.
Has Mr. Villalba spoken out on the trade war that will affect fellow Texans? Or was it only today that he noticed the additional $1 trillion in debt.
Sure, I'm happy that this one Republican legislator has spoken out. But, you know full well he'll remain a Republican and vote straight ticket R in every November to come. And I will bet that he will not cross the aisle to vote with his fellow Democratic Congresspeople. Nice words, and probably from the heart. But it's action we need, and while this one Republican has grown a bit of a spine, he will not, I guarantee you, change his voting.

(10,811 posts)I think any Republican willing to stand up and be counted, call out Trump for what he is and the danger he represents (the mortal danger) to the country should be listened to and given a modicum of respect.
II don't have to agree with anything else the man says or believes but for the moment if he's against the Trumpster and his odious acolytes, I'm listening and urging him to vote for the Dems in November to neuter and contain the damage.
Once this is over and Trump is gone, forever, we can go back to spitting at one another.
But IMHO, we need an intact country left for those spitting games, cat fights and arm wrestling matches to resume. And the only way that happens is to resist the Trumpster now, tomorrow and always, and then win in November.
