Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook chief executive, said in an interview published Wednesday that he would not automatically remove denials that the Holocaust took place from the site, a remark that caused an uproar online.
Mr. Zuckerbergs comments were made during an interview with the tech journalist Kara Swisher that was published on the site Recode. (Read the full transcript here.) Hours later, Mr. Zuckerberg tried to clarify his comments in an email to Recode.
In the interview, Mr. Zuckerberg had been discussing what content Facebook would remove from the site, and noted that in countries like Myanmar and Sri Lanka, the dissemination of hate speech can have immediate and dire consequences. Moments earlier, he had also defended his companys decision to allow content from the conspiracy site Infowars to be distributed on Facebook.
The principles that we have on what we remove from the service are: If its going to result in real harm, real physical harm, or if youre attacking individuals, then that content shouldnt be on the platform, he said.
eta: Further down in the article, Zuckerberg says he is Jewish, finds Holocaust denial deeply offensive but doesn't think the HD advocates are "intentionally getting it wrong". Huh ?!

(15,064 posts)videos on the Info wars Facebook page as being fake news today. They probably won't be removed but I just love reporting these creeps. Sometimes I've succeeded in having FB remove posts.

(2,541 posts)Maybe they are not intentionally getting wrong. Maybe they are extraordinarily ignorant. One would certainly have to be in order to be a HD. The voluminous amount of evidence is simply overwhelming...but there are people who think the Moon Landing was fake that Elvis is still alive and other imaginary tales so it does not surprise me that there are people who are HD.
As far as removing posts of this nature. Belief in free speech means speech one does agree with as well. While this does not fall into the category Constitutional protection and FB would have every right to remove it they shouldnt.

(15,315 posts)Like Facebook has always been around forever or something. Or maybe they really didn't keep in touch with their family before 2007. They really need to branch out and discover the whole rest of the internet, like the rest of their family very likely has already.

(108 posts)zuckerberg must focus on profits. If he kicks the conspiracy promoters and reality deniers out then that's less money in his pocket. That's how he combats fake news. He allows the Sandy Hook denier called infowars on facecrook.
