Why Trump's making more televised statements -- Bill Shine wants new ones to erase Helsinki summit

Little detail about the WH clean-up strategy from an article in the Wall Street Journal this evening:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/assailing-haters-trump-again-defends-remarks-alongside-putin-1531913614

Bill Shine, the newly minted deputy chief of staff for communications and a former Fox News executive, voiced concern that the White House needed to provide a new TV image so that networks would stop broadcasting images of Mr. Trump’s news conference in Helsinki, a person familiar with the matter said.

Mr. Trump would heed that advice, making a televised statement from the Cabinet Room during a meeting with lawmakers that was originally supposed to be closed to the press. Mr. Shine didn’t respond to a request for comment.

was about WH staff and Trump planning how to respond to the firestorm over the Helsinki summit, with the planning starting on Air Force One.

I thought the bit about Shine was interesting because Trump has been making a lot more televised statements than usual...though as others here have pointed out, they haven't exactly helped him, even though they probably have, as Shine hoped, cut into the amount of time video from the Helsinki press conference is broadcast again.

In fact, the more he does, the worse it gets. So yep, bring on the cameras & microphones. Let the man speak. We are all ears.

Trump sure has had more than the usual bad press days since Shine came on board.

Trump is a flighty, one note showboater, a one man band, but be can't stay on message more than a few minutes. Like any stage performer, Trump can ad lib, but he sucks at delivering a formal statement. He has trouble reading and has to follow every word without looking at the audience. He frequently strays from the official message to launch into a riff of his favorites zingers and one liners.

Trump's "new TV image" is the same as his old TV image, he comes preloaded with the same old stale, boring, whiny retorts interspaced with lies and boasting.
