Chuck Schumer @SenSchumerNo President should have the power to gift wrap American citizens, let alone former Ambassadors, to our known adversaries. This morning, @SenatorMenendez @SenatorDurbin @brianschatz & I offer a simple resolution that the Senate should pass today. Read it:

Mitch McConnell just set up a vote today on this @SenSchumer resolution calling for refusing to hand over U.S. diplomats or officers to Vladimir Putin.
(The White House wouldn't rule out doing so yesterday.)

(15,058 posts)would be happy to pick up Ambassador McFaul in the dead of night and spirit him on a private jet to Moscow.
Sick stuff. The fact that Sarah Suckabee thinks it's A-OK to even consider this is vile.

(10,134 posts)It would be so easy for Trump to turn some police, federal marshals or military members into his private SS.
They are there, they are willing, all they need is to be given orders.
So, yeah, Trump could easily force an American citizen to be delivered to Russian mobster spies and little tiny Putin.

(85,971 posts)Trump entertained a proposal from Vladimir Putin to let Russian authorities pose questions for the former U.S. ambassador to Moscow, Michael McFaul, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday.
Allowing the interrogation of a former American ambassador, who held diplomatic immunity while in Moscow, would be an unprecedented breach in protections traditionally provided to the nations foreign service.
In exchange for the opportunity to have McFaul and a number of other Americans questioned, the Russian president offered to let Special Counsel Robert Mueller observe interrogations of 12 Russian intelligence agents indicted by a U.S. grand jury last week for hacking Democratic Party email accounts.

(5,730 posts)Why does it not also name "private citizens of the United States of America?" How can we private citizens be secure?
Why does it specify, "by the government of Vladimir Putin?" Why not ANY foreign entity, no matter what the country or who the head of state is? When do North Korea and China start demanding extraditions? Or Afghanistan? Or . . . ?

(51,564 posts)and we should give them credit.
It is the GOP that wouldn't pass the bills that were introduced by Dems over a year ago calling for an Independent Investigation like we had after 9/11. It is non partisan, transparent, fully staffed and funded and relatively quick. Of course the GOP wouldn't vote for it since they INTEND to destroy the investigation since it is harmful to them personally and as a party.

(505 posts)But beyond all of this, what would the legal means for the government to do this? Have we come so far that the government can just grab someone off the street and send them to another country? Doesn't there have to be an arrest for some offense. Do we have an extradition treaty with the Russians?

(37,648 posts)Not to mention that we don't give our citizens to foreign enemies! WTH?
Trump needs to be removed asap. This is outrageous.
Hate to hear this is a Resolution & it's non-binding. Wish it were legislation so that this would absolutely be prevented. It could even be set to expire in a few years. As soon as the country is safe from Trump.

(4,103 posts)This is just another silly distraction that would never have gone anywhere, designed to keep the focus off other issues.
Trump throws out the most absurd nonsense and everyone in Congress and the media runs after it like cats chasing a laser pointer, they should ignore his idiocy and let Trump try it, it would force the hand of the GOP to start impeachment hearings.
bigtree
(85,971 posts)...that's most of the reason we're in such jeopardy today, because the majority has yet to step up to its responsibility to hold this president accountable.
A resolution is the least they should do.
They definitely should not ignore him.
