Many voted for him knowing he was a person without integrity, honor or morality, but they bought that his goals were their goals.

The difference in the op's account is that the person now sees that at least on foreign policy, Trump's goals are NOT theirs. On other issues - like the supreme court - he may still be in line with them. The big question is whether in 2018, they might see that a check is needed on Trump and the ONLY possible check that they could be part of getting is having the House or Senate in Democratic hands. However, if they have a long term positive relationship with their represenatives, they might be reluctant to vote against THEIR representatives and will hope others do.

2020 is far away and there, if they are conservative Republicans, they might vote for a primary challenger of Trump. The ones we might win back are the ones who voted for Obama in 2008 or 2012. They are clearly not ideologues. We need to make 2020 a referendum on Trump.

Moral boundaries
But when you’ve done all this, there is a crucial next step, usually the trickiest of all. You have to undermine moral boundaries, inure people to the acceptance of acts of extreme cruelty. Like hounds, people have to be blooded. They have to be given the taste for savagery. Fascism does this by building up the sense of threat from a despised out-group. This allows the members of that group to be dehumanised. Once that has been achieved, you can gradually up the ante, working through the stages from breaking windows to extermination.

It is this next step that is being test-marketed now. It is being done in Italy by the far-right leader and minister for the interior Matteo Salvini. How would it go down if we turn away boatloads of refugees? Let’s do a screening of the rough-cut of registering all the Roma and see what buttons the audience will press. And it has been trialled by Trump: let’s see how my fans feel about crying babies in cages. I wonder how it will go down with Rupert Murdoch.

To see, as most commentary has done, the deliberate traumatisation of migrant children as a “mistake” by Trump is culpable naivety. It is a trial run – and the trial has been a huge success. Trump’s claim last week that immigrants “infest” the US is a test-marketing of whether his fans are ready for the next step-up in language, which is of course “vermin”. And the generation of images of toddlers being dragged from their parents is a test of whether those words can be turned into sounds and pictures. It was always an experiment – it ended (but only in part) because the results were in.

‘Devious’ infants
And the results are quite satisfactory. There is good news on two fronts. First, Rupert Murdoch is happy with it – his Fox News mouthpieces outdid themselves in barbaric crassness: making animal noises at the mention of a Down syndrome child, describing crying children as actors. They went the whole swinish hog: even the brown babies are liars. Those sobs of anguish are typical of the manipulative behaviour of the strangers coming to infest us – should we not fear a race whose very infants can be so devious? Second, the hardcore fans loved it: 58 per cent of Republicans are in favour of this brutality. Trump’s overall approval ratings are up to 42.5 per cent.

Horrifying...

Truthfully, I'm not sure if that would even work at this point.

Thus was born "infotainment".

But at nearly 69 years old, I'm kind of losing that hope.

I graduated H.S. in 1967 - the Summer of Love - and all these years later, it seems to me that lots of people in our country have been steadily changing for the worse.

Back when I was young, I was sure we would change the world, and that enlightenment would win out. Now I think that only thing that will truly change the world is environmental catastrophe and a massive die-off of homosapiens.

I apologize for being so pessimistic.

But, we do have the rest of our lives to try to enjoy, and I hope to start doing that soon.

I don't see the trends reversing either because of international trickle-up economics and what the ultra-wealthy are doing with their money against us on the street. Inequality may well get worse with time and we could end up with another world-wide great depression.

My parents both went through the Great Depression in the 30s as very poor people in farming and timber, and they saw our recovery after WW2. I remember several times when they would get disgusted with people's behavior, my parents or grandparents would say: "what the world needs now is another Great Depression".

I'm sure what they meant was the we were overdue for another huge dose of humility and moral reset, and that's exactly what the world needs right now.

Agree. Some friends relatives in Ohio are LOST for good. Rotten and evil to the CORE. Sole less, racist creatures who are into this deep state shit and who don't read newspapers.

However, other friends in different parts of the country (Red) have told me that their friends/relatives have told them that they're sorry as HELL that they voted for Fatso. But, some said they fell for the "Hillary's in the basement of a pizza place sexually assaulting children" meme Or, some believed that Fatso was a great businessman. But once my friend showed that he had tons of bankruptcies and stiffed his vendors etc., my friends said their friends/relatives told them "OMG, we didn't read about that. He's a lying con man." Yep, people don't bother reading either, or use common sense.

We'll see what happens when they really get torn up financially, lose their jobs and start losing their health care. They can no longer blame Pres. Obama and they certainly can't blame Hillary.

This:

Fascism does not need a majority – it typically comes to power with about 40 per cent support and then uses control and intimidation to consolidate that power. So it doesn’t matter if most people hate you, as long as your 40 per cent is fanatically committed.

Trump's approval has held pretty close to 40%. We are on a precipice & could topple either way. In November we'll know if we have a fighting chance of if it's over. The dems absolutely must win control of at least on chamber of Congress for our republic to have any chance.

They dont care that Trump sold the country out. He could be making deals with Putin, US Classified info for cash payments, and it would be ignored or dismissed.

But the fact that Putin looked like the boss, that Trump looked like a cowed employee or worse.. That they care about

That's what I've been saying and why this will "stick": trump looked WEAK against putin. That is inexcusable to authoritarians.

Their tough guy alpha just got exposed as a beta weakling with his sugar daddy.

Everyone should be postings pics of trump and putin showing the cowed body language.

Alpha/beta terminology.

But at that presser.. He was neither. He was more in Epsilon range. The Meme going around referencing Reek is right on target.

I don't know what epsilon means...
I try to avoid the b*itch comparison, "gril-ly man" etc.

Then there's "cuck" but that's vulgar

Thanks for this.

We need to see these sparks of sanity because that's not what is shown on the news.

Show the deplorables how weak Donnie looks to the world. These people will never vote for a Democrat, but if we can snap them out of their slavish devotion to him, he'll have nothing left.

The deplorables I know (and here in red southern Illinois and living on a farm I know many) are still vacillating between, "Thanks Putin for saving us from Hillary" and "Well which is worse talking to Putin or selling him uranium?"

The polling that came out yesterday said that 40% of Americans approved of the Helsinki suck off... thats almost no different than his overall numbers. Meaning it didn't move the needle significantly.

These are the ultra patriotic, to the point of insanity, people. They hate all things not American. I would think this will sour a lot of them.

This week alone, beat back a half dozen or so Rs on Facebook who said, "gee, if it only weren't Hillary (the sane, decent, highly competent and accomplished public servant)."
