The fog is lifting...
My MAGA humper neighbor today, was pissed...started ranting about how he didn't vote for Putin to be running the country...he ranted on about how Dolt45 was being so weak..
Was he going to vote for him again? This Putin thing has got to him..

(59,503 posts)Many voted for him knowing he was a person without integrity, honor or morality, but they bought that his goals were their goals.
The difference in the op's account is that the person now sees that at least on foreign policy, Trump's goals are NOT theirs. On other issues - like the supreme court - he may still be in line with them. The big question is whether in 2018, they might see that a check is needed on Trump and the ONLY possible check that they could be part of getting is having the House or Senate in Democratic hands. However, if they have a long term positive relationship with their represenatives, they might be reluctant to vote against THEIR representatives and will hope others do.
2020 is far away and there, if they are conservative Republicans, they might vote for a primary challenger of Trump. The ones we might win back are the ones who voted for Obama in 2008 or 2012. They are clearly not ideologues. We need to make 2020 a referendum on Trump.

(12,422 posts)The paper, called "The Glens Falls Chronicle", is owned by a conservative Republican who often writes a lot of angry stuff against liberals. I was shocked to see today's issue had a reprint from another paper on the front page, which is pretty unusual. This is what they reprinted:

(31,893 posts)But when youve done all this, there is a crucial next step, usually the trickiest of all. You have to undermine moral boundaries, inure people to the acceptance of acts of extreme cruelty. Like hounds, people have to be blooded. They have to be given the taste for savagery. Fascism does this by building up the sense of threat from a despised out-group. This allows the members of that group to be dehumanised. Once that has been achieved, you can gradually up the ante, working through the stages from breaking windows to extermination.
It is this next step that is being test-marketed now. It is being done in Italy by the far-right leader and minister for the interior Matteo Salvini. How would it go down if we turn away boatloads of refugees? Lets do a screening of the rough-cut of registering all the Roma and see what buttons the audience will press. And it has been trialled by Trump: lets see how my fans feel about crying babies in cages. I wonder how it will go down with Rupert Murdoch.
To see, as most commentary has done, the deliberate traumatisation of migrant children as a mistake by Trump is culpable naivety. It is a trial run and the trial has been a huge success. Trumps claim last week that immigrants infest the US is a test-marketing of whether his fans are ready for the next step-up in language, which is of course vermin. And the generation of images of toddlers being dragged from their parents is a test of whether those words can be turned into sounds and pictures. It was always an experiment it ended (but only in part) because the results were in.
Devious infants
And the results are quite satisfactory. There is good news on two fronts. First, Rupert Murdoch is happy with it his Fox News mouthpieces outdid themselves in barbaric crassness: making animal noises at the mention of a Down syndrome child, describing crying children as actors. They went the whole swinish hog: even the brown babies are liars. Those sobs of anguish are typical of the manipulative behaviour of the strangers coming to infest us should we not fear a race whose very infants can be so devious? Second, the hardcore fans loved it: 58 per cent of Republicans are in favour of this brutality. Trumps overall approval ratings are up to 42.5 per cent.
Horrifying...

(31,893 posts)Truthfully, I'm not sure if that would even work at this point.
The over-arching problem is that "news" became a profit center instead of a public service in return for the use of the public airwaves.
Thus was born "infotainment".
BlancheSplanchnik
(20,219 posts)immune to public airwaves regulations, can claim freedom of speech rights, I think. And theyve got a 24hrs/day cycle. Theyve got a lot of airtime to fill.
Its all about profit$.

(31,893 posts)I'm sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but TV media-wise we are very, very fucked.
Our only hope - and it's very faint - is if Democrats win the midterms, both houses of Congress, the makeup of the FCC can be changed and media mergers/monopolies can be undone somehow over time.
BlancheSplanchnik
(20,219 posts)So entrenched with tentacles everywhere, it would take a long time to change.
OTOH, more people turning off that kind of sewage would accomplish the same thing. People might just be changing. 🤞🏾

(31,893 posts)But at nearly 69 years old, I'm kind of losing that hope.
I graduated H.S. in 1967 - the Summer of Love - and all these years later, it seems to me that lots of people in our country have been steadily changing for the worse.
Back when I was young, I was sure we would change the world, and that enlightenment would win out. Now I think that only thing that will truly change the world is environmental catastrophe and a massive die-off of homosapiens.
I apologize for being so pessimistic.

(14,490 posts)But, we do have the rest of our lives to try to enjoy, and I hope to start doing that soon.
I don't see the trends reversing either because of international trickle-up economics and what the ultra-wealthy are doing with their money against us on the street. Inequality may well get worse with time and we could end up with another world-wide great depression.
My parents both went through the Great Depression in the 30s as very poor people in farming and timber, and they saw our recovery after WW2. I remember several times when they would get disgusted with people's behavior, my parents or grandparents would say: "what the world needs now is another Great Depression".
I'm sure what they meant was the we were overdue for another huge dose of humility and moral reset, and that's exactly what the world needs right now.

(36,461 posts)The dems/left have ignored hate radio for over three decades & still do. Hate radio is why grown women were lamenting that they had to choose between "a child predator & a pro-abortion candidate" in the Jones/Moore race last year. The left totally gave up the narrative to the right & still does.

(3,479 posts)the results were disastrous. Even the 55% GOP support is poor considering Trump's overall approval rating with these assholes is in the high 80s. The rest of the country by and large found the family seperation policy horrifying.
I have two Republican acquaintances who voted for Trump and defend him passionately. They haven't said a fucking word about the man since the detention camp scandal broke.

(6,974 posts)Agree. Some friends relatives in Ohio are LOST for good. Rotten and evil to the CORE. Sole less, racist creatures who are into this deep state shit and who don't read newspapers.
However, other friends in different parts of the country (Red) have told me that their friends/relatives have told them that they're sorry as HELL that they voted for Fatso. But, some said they fell for the "Hillary's in the basement of a pizza place sexually assaulting children" meme Or, some believed that Fatso was a great businessman. But once my friend showed that he had tons of bankruptcies and stiffed his vendors etc., my friends said their friends/relatives told them "OMG, we didn't read about that. He's a lying con man." Yep, people don't bother reading either, or use common sense.
We'll see what happens when they really get torn up financially, lose their jobs and start losing their health care. They can no longer blame Pres. Obama and they certainly can't blame Hillary.

(5,810 posts)are the targeted group. They never have the imagination to think beyond whatever group is in the spotlight right now. It never occurs to them that if one group can be targeted, so can another. So when their feathers get singed, then it will be plain to them. Too bad they could not predict that just watching another group get savaged for no reason beyond the color of their skin or their religious faith or their country of origin.

(36,461 posts)This:
Fascism does not need a majority it typically comes to power with about 40 per cent support and then uses control and intimidation to consolidate that power. So it doesnt matter if most people hate you, as long as your 40 per cent is fanatically committed.
Trump's approval has held pretty close to 40%. We are on a precipice & could topple either way. In November we'll know if we have a fighting chance of if it's over. The dems absolutely must win control of at least on chamber of Congress for our republic to have any chance.

Just bring up when he starts ranting about how the rest of the republican party is letting him get away with all of this crap, and stymieing any Democratic attempts to get to the bottom of it, e.g. blocking having the translator testify about what was said in their private little get together.

He talks about "ratings" as though this is a reality show. The gop OWNS this total disaster of a human being. Unfortunately, Vlad's rubles are still welcome in the gop.
