I can't think of any other explanation for Trump's obvious anxiousness before their private meeting at Helsinki, or his craven abused-pupppy-still-trying-to-please demeanor throughout the press conference afterward.
It doesn't matter that there was one other American in the room, the American interpreter.
It would have been all too easy for Putin to whisper to his own interpreter, who in turn could whisper to Trump, that there would be no more patience while Trump tries to do favors for Russia without being too obvious about it...and Trump's attacks on our G7 and NATO allies would not be enough to satisfy Putin.
I'm sure there were hints of this before the private meeting. But I have no doubt that Putin spelled it out in private.
Putin wants much more from Trump now, including the invitation to the White House, to make Trump's surrender even more official and obvious.
