These tapes were an insurance policy.

He could have bartered them for a lighter sentence. But it appears that Mueller got them in the raid. Trump and Cohen each have egg on their face.

In the movies it will be a young lawyer. He's listening to the tapes with her headphones. He's exhausted, having been listening to all sort of recordings for days (weeks? months?) on end. He's almost catatonic.

And then these recordings come up. He comes alive. A co-worker asks if he's okay? She pushes her chair back from her cubicle desk, looks around for her immediate supervising lawyer. She runs over to listen. She then grabs the tapes and tells him to come with her, and they run to Mueller's office - direct to the top. He listens, then smiles, then fade to black.

Or did I just describe some scene from All the President's Men?
