Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDirector James Gunn has been fired from 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3' after offensive tweets resurface
"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him," Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement given to Business Insider.
Gunn was writing the script to the third "Guardians" movie, which was to begin shooting in the fall with a 2020 release date.
Gunn's offensive tweets, which he wrote in 2010 and 2011, were brought back to light by conservative personalities who were opposed to Gunn's tweets against President Trump and the Republican Party.

(6,399 posts)Combined with what a lot of writers/directors do early in their career in the modern day to catch attention to their works.
It's gonna be a slow change and a hard change in a lot of ways. This happens with a bunch of athletes as well but they generally get kicked for a few games, pay a penalty, do some sensitivity training, and move on.
Disney, to their credit, didn't do anything different than they did with Roseanne. So even though I like Gunn and he talked last night about how he grew and changed over the past several years, it's an easy let-go moment.
Does make me curious what Marvel will do now since they had said that he was going to be instrumental in the next big phase after Avengers 4 with the direction of the whole shebang.

(38,000 posts)Not all characters need the same tone. That's what helped when Gunn came on as it was different than what came before with Thor, Cap, Avengers, Iron Man and all that.
Waititi's great and I'd love to see him do another Thor or explore a character not yet introduced.

(17,863 posts)It happened now, and she continued with the offensive tweets even as the controversy went on around her. I cannot believe that a Jewish teenager under the iron heel of the German Nazis in WW II was called a Nazi.
I don't know what Gunn's old tweets said, but the two situations are not equivalent.

You're lacking half the context.

(6,399 posts)Gunn deleted a ton of this years ago and apologized for it and talked about the growth that came from it as he engaged with a wider community.
Good people grow from experiences.
Shitheels double down on it.

(100,070 posts)Also if Disney fired Gunn because of this douche, I will boycott GOTG 3, and I have seen every MCU flick from day one. Fuck the Pizzagate morons.

(100,070 posts)I'm raging over this one. Cernovich (serial rapist) and his goons have turned pedophilia into a weapon and they used today. Fuck these fucking assholes.

(16,858 posts)Tweets from 2010 and 2011 that he had been VERY honest about previously! Marvel/Disney has to have known about it because Gunn has been very open about them. There's no way they didn't know about this when he first began work writing and directing the first GotG....no way.

(64,933 posts)That being said, what he posted was offensive, but I don't know what his popularity is compared to Roseanne Barr. It just goes to say, that you have to be careful what you post.

there's more pure fun and joy in the first 15 minutes of GotG2 than most other movies can pack into the full runtime

(463 posts)I really liked his spin on the MCU, but those tweets are indefensible no matter when they were made. Disney has an image to maintain, and no way were they keeping him after half the Internet saw him make hundreds of comments about rape and pedophilia.
I don't really care that it was right-wingers who brought him down. This is how the outrage mob of social media works nowadays. Sometimes we get one of theirs, sometimes they get one of ours.
Anyone who isn't squeaky clean in their social media history needs to delete that stuff before getting into political slap fights. It just won't end well. There are people online who have nothing but time on their hands and will doxx and go looking. I'm wondering if a disgruntled Star Wars critic didn't go looking and then tipped the Daily Caller off (Gunn very recently got into it with one of the most rabid fan bases on earth).
I'm surprised someone on Gunn's team, like an assistant or PR type, weren't all over that as soon as he started getting famous.
It really didn't help that one of the friends he was "joking" with about child rape actually was convicted of pedophilia last year. You just know people are going to start wondering if there's something there we're not seeing. No way in hell Disney was going to invite that one.
Sad day, but it's honestly his own damn fault.
Adenoid_Hynkel
(14,093 posts)Disney was aware of it when they hired him.
South Park and Family Guy do much worse every week to this day, and Cernovich is a fucking rapist.
