RALEIGH, N.C. — Gang activity overall is on the rise in North Carolina, and the sharpest increase is among white supremacist groups, law enforcement officials said Friday.

The major gangs operating in North Carolina are still the Bloods, the Crips and the Gangsters, or Folk Nation, but Tony Taylor, who heads the Special Operations and Intelligence Section of the state Department of Public Safety, said the rise in white supremacy groups is a new development.

"We're not sure what's causing it. It's just a trend we're starting to see, and we're trying to figure that out," Taylor told members of the state Emergency Response Commission. "We don't know what's causing it other than this one group that seems to be standing out right now – Bound for Glory."

Russell Jackson, a DPS intelligence agent, said national groups like the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Pride also are expanding across the state, including inside the prison system.

11. As an Indian American who lives in NC

this is very disturbing. I was born in VA but lived an hour out of Boston and then moved to Cary when I was 11 which is a suburb outside of Raleigh, NC. I came to the Raleigh area during the mid 90's and experienced a lot of racism back in the day. I got into a lot of fights with kids who would always scream at me "Go back to India." It was really for me an unbearable area to live in at that time since the racism was pretty open and blatant. One thing I have observed about the area I live in which is Wake County that is how in a period of 20 years it went from being a strong conservative county now to being a super liberal county. It's like there has been a 180 transformation.

Also I have observed in the suburb I grew up in there is a stronger and larger Indian presence. Growing up when I first moved to the area there was only 1 Indian Grocery store and a few restaurants and now there is a bunch of them that it's hard to count. In the suburb my parents live in you can go to a target, Walmart and you will see a ton of Indian people more so then I ever saw 20 years ago. It was rare as hell to see any Indian person living in that area.

The reason why I bring this all up is that I believe NC has gotten a lot more diverse that areas that were once super white have become darker. In return I feel now they are a lot of people who feel threatened by this change and want NC to go back to what it once was. They can't accept the change and these gangs is a result of them wanting to make things go back to the old days.

14. My experience in Wayne County, NC

I am white and moved to Goldsboro NC two years ago. My development is mixed racially and since I have moved here from northern NJ, where the population has been racially mixed for many years, I can say that I haven't heard anyone say anything negative about anyone else racially since I have moved here. I see people of different races interacting daily and see only cordial greetings and polite discussion. I could be wrong, but from what I can see so far the people here, at least where I live, seem to be open minded and accepting of others.
